Principal Software Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential fintech organization that is building next-generation financial technology products used by millions across multiple markets. As their systems scale globally, our client needs exceptional technical leaders who can solve complex engineering challenges while raising the bar for the entire engineering organization.

This Principal Software Engineer role is a hands-on technical leadership position where you'll own the design and execution of major products and systems from concept through production deployment.

Responsibilities

• Own technical design and execution for major products, systems, and engineering initiatives that serve millions of users
• Design scalable, reliable systems across backend, frontend, APIs, databases, and cloud infrastructure
• Build alongside the engineering team through hands-on coding, prototyping, code reviews, debugging, and production problem-solving
• Drive critical architecture decisions and technical trade-offs balancing speed, scalability, reliability, cost, and maintainability
• Transform ambiguous product requirements into clear technical solutions and actionable execution plans
• Elevate engineering quality through improved system design, testing practices, security measures, observability, and development workflows
• Lead technically critical initiatives and mentor engineers across multiple teams

What We're Looking For

• 7+ years of software engineering experience building and shipping production systems at scale
• Deep technical expertise in backend engineering, frontend development, distributed systems, API design, databases, or cloud infrastructure
• Strong system design and architecture skills for complex, high-scale environments
• Excellent coding ability with commitment to remaining hands-on throughout your career
• Proven track record of technically leading major engineering projects from initial design through production deployment
• Ability to make sound technical trade-offs, influence engineering peers, and solve complex production challenges
• Strong English communication skills for collaboration across global teams

Preferred qualifications:

• Experience scaling engineering teams, systems, or development practices through periods of significant growth
• Experience operating across multiple products, markets, or countries

Location: United Kingdom (hybrid - minimum 3 days per week in local office)
