About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential energy technology company based in Cologne that is building intelligent systems at the intersection of energy management and market optimization. Our client combines battery storage optimization with energy procurement to deliver measurable cost savings and grid flexibility for industrial customers.

As a Backend Engineer, you'll join a core team of approximately 15 people working on the platform that connects industrial battery storage systems with energy markets. This is a high-impact role where your work directly influences both customer savings and renewable energy integration.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and improve optimization algorithms and trading systems through rapid iteration while maintaining production stability
  • Make architectural decisions under uncertainty and scale the platform to the next level of capability
  • Maintain oversight of the entire system from customer sites through market interfaces
  • Build monitoring, alerting, and reporting infrastructure to measure operations and savings outcomes
  • Work in an AI-native environment using coding agents, LLM-supported workflows, and automation as daily tools
  • Collaborate closely with product and energy domain experts, giving and receiving direct feedback

What We're Looking For

Required:

  • Strong product thinking—you want to understand the system deeply, not just complete isolated tasks
  • Comfort with close collaboration: direct feedback, rapid iteration over solo perfection
  • Proven experience building and operating production backend systems
  • Strong skills in Python, SQL, containers, and cloud environments (e.g., AWS)
  • Routine experience working with coding agents and critically reviewing their output—speed without losing control
  • Fluent German and English

Nice to Have (not required):

  • CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, monitoring systems
  • Time series data and forecasting models
  • Knowledge of energy markets
  • Mathematical optimization (LP/MILP, solvers)
  • Edge and field connectivity protocols (Modbus TCP, MQTT, IEC 60870-5-104)
  • Interest in game theory or trading
  • Startup experience with short decision paths and high autonomy
