Pro Bono Scholars – Full Time

The Pro Bono Scholars - Full Time position is offered by the Erie County Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project in Buffalo, Erie County.

This role welcomes law students in their final year who are enrolled in the Pro Bono Scholars Program and seek hands‑on experience providing civil legal assistance to underserved residents.

About the Role

As a Pro Bono Scholar, you will work under the supervision of volunteer attorneys to support the Project’s mission of expanding access to justice across Erie County.

What You'll Do

• Conduct legal research and memo writing on matters such as housing, consumer rights, and family law
• Assist with client intake, interviews, and case assessments under attorney guidance
• Draft pleadings, motions, correspondence, and other legal documents for review
• Participate in community legal clinics and outreach events hosted by the Volunteer Lawyers Project
• Maintain confidential case files and update tracking systems in compliance with office procedures
• Collaborate with supervising lawyers and fellow scholars to develop effective advocacy strategies

What We're Looking For

• Current enrollment in an accredited law school, preferably in the final year
• Active participation in the Pro Bono Scholars Program through your law school
• Strong analytical skills and the ability to synthesize legal information quickly
• Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
• Commitment to public service and sensitivity to diverse client backgrounds
• Proficiency with standard office software and willingness to learn case‑management tools

About Erie County Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project

The Erie County Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project provides free civil legal services to low‑income individuals throughout Buffalo and the surrounding region. By partnering with volunteer attorneys and law student scholars, the Project addresses critical needs in housing, employment, family law, and consumer protection while fostering the next generation of public‑interest lawyers.

Placements are available at both the Buffalo and Batavia offices, giving scholars the option to serve either community.
