About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential European defence technology client seeking a Working Student in Hardware Engineering to join their unmanned systems development team in Berlin. This hands-on role focuses on propulsion and power systems—the critical components that determine flight performance, endurance, and mission capability.

You'll work directly with motors, batteries, propellers, and power electronics, supporting bench characterisation and generating the measured data that informs what goes into production aircraft. This is an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience in unmanned systems hardware engineering while contributing to platforms used in high-stakes operational environments.

Responsibilities

  • Support characterisation and bench testing of motors, propellers, batteries, and power components for unmanned aerial platforms
  • Set up test rigs and instrumentation to capture clean, repeatable measurement data
  • Assist with component selection and trade-off analysis by converting test data into clear performance comparisons
  • Reduce and analyse test data using MATLAB and Python—focusing on efficiency, thrust, endurance, thermal behaviour, and discharge characteristics
  • Visualise results in formats that enable rapid engineering decision-making
  • Maintain documentation of test setups, measurements, and findings to ensure traceability

What We're Looking For

Required:

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, or comparable engineering field
  • Working knowledge of MATLAB and Python for data analysis
  • Interest in and some exposure to unmanned aerial systems, electric propulsion (motors/ESCs), or battery/power systems
  • Must be a citizen of a NATO member state (due to export control and security regulations)
  • Practical, hands-on mindset—comfortable working at the bench and with measurement equipment as well as writing analysis scripts
  • Good written and verbal communication skills in English; German is a plus
  • Hands-on approach: enjoys building, measuring, and discovering real-world behaviour
  • Rigorous: values clean measurements over assumptions
  • Curious: wants to understand why components behave as they do

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with test benches, data acquisition systems, or measurement instrumentation
  • Familiarity with battery testing, thermal behaviour, or motor/propeller characterisation
  • Personal projects involving drones, RC aircraft, batteries, or robotics
