About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential federal consulting organization seeking a Technical Editor to lead editorial processes for high-stakes transportation infrastructure documentation. This fully remote position requires transforming complex engineering data and technical content into clear, authoritative publications for government agencies, practitioners, and the public.
You will oversee the complete editorial lifecycle—from initial outlines through final publication—while ensuring compliance with federal style guides and accessibility standards. This role includes mentoring junior staff and coordinating with subject matter experts across large-scale programs.
Responsibilities
- Lead editorial processes for complex technical documents, reports, manuals, and web-based products serving federal transportation initiatives
- Perform substantive and technical editing to ensure organization, clarity, accuracy, and consistency across all deliverables
- Transform engineering terminology and raw data into accessible content appropriate for diverse audiences
- Collaborate with subject matter experts to verify technical accuracy while maintaining readability
- Apply U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO) Style Manual standards to federal publications
- Conduct reference checking, fact checking, and editorial quality assurance throughout document lifecycles
- Ensure Section 508 accessibility compliance and review content for copyright and attribution requirements
- Coordinate multiple authors, reviewers, and stakeholders to maintain editorial consistency across related publications
- Manage competing deadlines and assignments independently while maintaining high editorial standards
- Provide editorial direction, mentoring, and quality oversight to junior editors and project staff
- Support document production using Microsoft Office applications and PDF tools from development through final publication
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications:
- Master's degree in English, Journalism, or a technical field
- 10+ years of experience editing technical documents, managing projects, and supervising editorial staff
- 10+ years of experience with GPO Style Manual and government publishing standards
- 10+ years of experience with document quality control and Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
- Ability to obtain government clearance if required
- Exceptional command of grammar, syntax, usage, punctuation, and editorial conventions
- Strong editorial judgment for resolving substantive issues in complex technical content
- Proven ability to manage competing priorities, deadlines, and stakeholder perspectives
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience supporting federal government agencies and federal publications
- Transportation industry background, particularly highway and surface transportation
- Experience editing engineering, research, scientific, or policy documentation
- Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat Pro, CommonLook, and Section 508 accessibility requirements
- Familiarity with online publishing and collaboration tools (Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, project management platforms)
- Ability to diplomatically reconcile conflicting reviewer comments while maintaining document integrity
- Self-directed problem-solving skills with capacity to work independently and exercise sound judgment
