Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Identity International)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential fintech client seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join their backend engineering team focused on identity and international expansion. This is a remote position based in the United Kingdom.

Our client is scaling their identity verification and customer onboarding capabilities across international markets. You'll work on mission-critical systems that form the foundation of customer authentication, KYC verification, and compliance in diverse regulatory environments. This role sits at the intersection of technical architecture and business impact, directly influencing approval rates, conversion, and risk management on a global scale.

Responsibilities

• Set technical strategy for your team on a year-long time horizon and align it with business-critical initiatives
• Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics throughout the product development lifecycle to manage technical sustainability, risks, and trade-offs
• Act as a technical force-multiplier by defining solutions and operational processes that elevate team performance
• Own team operations and service availability through monitoring, on-call rotations, playbooks, testing, and alerting infrastructure
• Foster a culture of quality and ownership by establishing code review standards and design principles, sharing knowledge through documentation and technical presentations
• Develop engineering talent through mentorship, feedback, and leading by example
• Drive architectural changes that impact identity services globally, supporting new risk models and market requirements

What We're Looking For

• 8+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin
• Extensive track record building highly available distributed systems with AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes
• Proven experience delivering major features, system components, or deprecating legacy functionality through well-defined technical and execution plans
• Ability to write high-quality, maintainable code that is easily understood and used by others
• Comfort navigating ambiguity and moving between low-level implementation details and high-level system architecture
• Demonstrated growth trajectory showing mastery of gathering and iterating on feedback from engineering and cross-functional peers
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration with global engineering teams
• Experience with identity management, KYC verification, or compliance-related systems is advantageous
