About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential B2B marketplace organization that is building critical digital infrastructure for a traditional European industry. Our client is replacing fragmented manual processes with modern software, creating a unified platform where producers, commercial buyers, and distributors collaborate efficiently.

We are seeking a Tech Lead Marketplace Experience to take technical ownership of the core marketplace and its services. This is a hands-on leadership role where you will build a new engineering squad from the ground up, set technical direction, and work closely with product teams to deliver measurable value to customers. You will report directly to the CTO and have significant autonomy to shape both the technical architecture and team culture.

Responsibilities

• Own the architecture, technical quality, and evolution of the marketplace platform and its associated services
• Build and grow your engineering squad, developing team members and fostering a culture of ownership, pragmatism, and continuous learning
• Develop a clear technical strategy for the marketplace experience, making deliberate decisions about how to leverage and extend the Spryker Commerce OS
• Collaborate closely with product management to translate buyer and seller needs into sustainable technical solutions
• Ensure your team delivers software continuously, safely, and reliably—from technical specification and architecture through API design, development, operations, incident management, and continuous improvement
• Take responsibility for performance, stability, security, and compliance, ensuring technical risks are identified early, assessed, and deliberately addressed
• Lead hands-on in the codebase while avoiding becoming a technical bottleneck, making architectural decisions that support long-term maintainability and extensibility
• Leverage AI tools effectively in day-to-day engineering work and help your team use AI responsibly for development, testing, documentation, and code reviews
• Engage directly with customers, including on-site visits, to test solutions in real operational environments

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Several years of experience as a Tech Lead or Senior Engineer working on web and e-commerce applications
• Strong practical expertise with PHP and Spryker Commerce OS, with a clear understanding of when to work within Spryker conventions, when to extend them, and when to deviate deliberately
• Experience with API-first or spec-first development approaches
• Hands-on knowledge of AWS cloud infrastructure, modern deployment processes, and monitoring systems
• Previous experience building teams and understanding what makes teams successful
• Genuine interest in both product development (software) and team development (people)
• Self-directed work style, clear communication skills, high quality standards
• Fluent German and very good English

Preferred qualifications:

• Strong TypeScript skills
• Experience with ERP, warehouse management, or commerce systems
• Experience with complex order management, pricing, or inventory/catalogue processes
• Previous work in a startup or fast-growing technology company

Working style at our client: Teams own their entire product area—architecture, API design, development, operations, incidents, security, compliance, and the commercial KPIs. Responsibility extends beyond the merge button. Direct customer engagement, including field visits, is part of the role. This is a hybrid position based in Cologne with regular travel to customers and partners.
