Tax Auditor (Utility User Tax) (Remote or On-Site)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential government technology organization in their search for a Tax Auditor specializing in Utility User Tax. This remote or on-site position offers the opportunity to conduct compliance reviews and regulatory examinations on behalf of municipal clients across the United States.

Our talent team is seeking a detail-oriented professional who will perform comprehensive tax audits, with primary focus on utility users tax, and may also handle sales & use tax, franchise fees, business licenses, hotel/motel taxes, and various other state and local assessments.

Responsibilities

• Perform examination of taxpayer records for compliance with state and local tax regulations under supervisor direction
• Research examination leads and schedule appointments with taxpayers and their representatives
• Prepare for audits by reviewing tax returns, prior audit reports, and available preliminary data
• Meet with taxpayers to discuss examination procedures, answer questions, and obtain necessary information and records
• Examine and verify business and financial records to ensure compliance
• Prepare documentation supporting all adjustments and compute assessments accurately
• Review and discuss findings with taxpayers and representatives, explaining how tax laws apply to specific operations
• Conduct closing conferences explaining applicable law and facts supporting changes in tax liabilities
• Respond to taxpayer inquiries and may participate in hearings of disputed cases
• Travel as required to complete examinations

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in Accounting
• Minimum 2-3 years of related professional experience
• Knowledge of accounting principles and strong analytical skills
• Professional, customer service oriented approach with tact and diplomacy
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Strong working knowledge of accounting systems and Microsoft Office
• Self-starter with ability to organize, plan, and direct work independently
• Ability to make decisions under uncertainty using professional judgment

Preferred Qualifications:

• State and local tax knowledge or experience
• CPA or CIA certification
• Professional background in corporate accounting and finance
• Experience with state or local revenue departments, compliance audits, or audit defense
• Ability to diplomatically overcome limitations taxpayers face in providing information and records
