Staff Software Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a fast-growing UK technology company seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join their team in Uddingston. This is a senior individual contributor role where you'll work directly with the Head of Development to shape technical direction, establish engineering standards, and mentor teams while remaining hands-on with critical systems.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership and expert guidance across engineering teams
• Establish and maintain engineering standards, code review processes, and deployment quality controls
• Lead technical problem-solving and incident response across critical business systems
• Own and influence architecture and technical design decisions across multiple platforms
• Pair with engineers on critical systems to reduce single points of failure and transfer knowledge
• Mentor engineers progressing toward senior-level responsibilities
• Partner with Product and Operations teams to align technical decisions with business objectives
• Identify and address technical debt, operational risk, and scalability constraints proactively
• Contribute hands-on code where required
• Champion continuous improvement and engineering excellence

What We're Looking For

Required:

• 8+ years of commercial software engineering experience
• Experience owning and operating production distributed systems end-to-end
• Strong expertise in TypeScript or Python
• Deep Google Cloud Platform experience, or equivalent cloud platform knowledge
• Proven track record designing, building, and operating large-scale systems
• Experience improving engineering standards, quality processes, or software delivery practices
• Experience leading incident response and writing post-incident reviews
• Excellent system design and architecture capabilities
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
• Proven mentoring and technical leadership experience
• Ability to influence technical decisions across multiple teams or business functions
• Ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on engineering delivery

Nice to Have:

• E-commerce, logistics, or payments experience
• Terraform and Infrastructure as Code expertise
• Experience with observability tooling such as OpenTelemetry
• Experience introducing AI-assisted development workflows safely
