Staff Security Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential applied AI engineering firm seeking a Staff Security Engineer to lead security architecture for cloud applications and AI systems. This is a remote position based in the United States.

Our client is an established engineering organization that builds production-ready AI systems for enterprise clients across financial services, healthcare, retail, energy, and manufacturing. They specialize in AWS-based architectures and ship AI co-workers that integrate into real business operations with measurable impact.

This role is ideal for an experienced security engineer who can define security architecture end-to-end, own the hardest technical problems, and provide leadership across cross-functional teams. You'll shape how AI systems are secured in production environments that ship in 30 to 45 days.

Responsibilities

• Define security architecture and engineering standards across web, API, and cloud-native systems
• Lead threat modeling and security design reviews for applications and AI systems, establishing how risk is identified and prioritized
• Architect cloud security controls across identity, network, and data layers, owning IAM strategy, secrets management, and encryption
• Lead integration of security automation into CI/CD pipelines, driving shift-left detection and policy-as-code practices
• Own detection engineering, logging, and incident response practices across production systems
• Secure AI and LLM-powered applications against prompt injection, data leakage, model abuse, and agentic-AI threats
• Design and integrate AI services into production security workflows, including LLM APIs, tool calling, and multi-step agent flows
• Partner with product, engineering, and leadership to align security strategy with business outcomes
• Translate complex security tradeoffs and risks into clear narratives for technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through coaching, code reviews, and pairing on challenging problems
• Take ownership of ambiguous, high-stakes work and drive it to production with attention to reliability, cost, and safety

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• 7+ years of professional security or software engineering experience
• At least 3 years leading application and cloud security initiatives
• Deep expertise in application security, secure coding practices, and OWASP Top 10
• Strong experience with threat modeling, penetration testing, vulnerability management, and secure code review
• Deep cloud security expertise across identity, network, and data layers
• Strong experience embedding security automation and policy-as-code into CI/CD pipelines
• Strong experience with detection engineering, logging, and incident response at scale
• Strong experience securing AI and LLM-powered applications, including prompt injection, data leakage, model abuse, and agentic-AI threats
• Experience with security, compliance, and governance frameworks
• Demonstrated leadership and technical mentoring experience
• Strong stakeholder communication skills with ability to translate technical depth across audiences
• Day-to-day usage and expert knowledge of AI-forward tools such as Claude and Cursor
• Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to navigate ambiguous technical challenges
