Staff Backend Engineer – Grafana Second Horizon | Spain | Remote

About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential observability and data intelligence organization in their search for a Staff Backend Engineer to join a high-impact skunkworks initiative. This remote role is open to candidates located in Spain, Sweden, UK, Ireland, or Germany.

Our client is building an AI-native data intelligence system that provides AI agents with reliable, governed access to enterprise context. The mission is to create a platform where agents can retrieve the right data, metadata, definitions, lineage, quality signals, and institutional knowledge without requiring brittle, manually-maintained context files. This is an early-stage, high-autonomy team combining experienced engineers with new talent, operating with significant ownership and decision-making authority.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, test, and operate core backend services for context ingestion, indexing, retrieval orchestration, API access, source configuration, and system administration
• Define and build scalable multi-tenant SaaS architecture including tenant isolation, usage tracking, quotas, audit logs, background jobs, and reliable service boundaries
• Build APIs and service interfaces enabling AI agents, MCP tools, CLIs, and internal applications to retrieve relevant context, provenance, confidence signals, and warnings
• Partner across product and infrastructure teams to balance fast experimentation with long-term reliability as the project transitions from prototype to production
• Instrument services with comprehensive observability: metrics, logs, traces, alerts, and dashboards to understand and improve system behavior
• Shape technical direction including architecture, service boundaries, storage choices, API contracts, deployment patterns, and engineering practices
• Communicate effectively in a highly dynamic, collaborative, remote-first environment
• Take full ownership of solutions, ensuring they are innovative, scalable, maintainable, and aligned with real user workflows

What We're Looking For

Required Skills & Experience:

• Strong track record building production-grade, user-facing software systems
• Self-starter capable of tackling complex engineering problems with minimal supervision
• Familiarity with AI technologies and frameworks, with focus on delivering practical, real-world solutions
• Comfortable with rapid iteration, releasing prototypes, and collecting feedback
• Proven initiative driving projects forward and defining scope in ambiguous environments
• Experience with LLMs, prompt engineering, and building GenAI-powered applications
• Demonstrated success delivering software actively used in production
• Exposure to cloud-native environments (AWS, GCP, Azure)
• Experience using observability tools to troubleshoot and understand system behavior
• Excellent communication skills and collaborative mindset

Bonus Qualifications:

• Experience building or working with agent frameworks or multi-agent workflows
• Background as a data analyst or with data platforms such as Looker, Tableau, PowerBI, Snowflake, or Databricks
• Experience building tools for data engineering

Pay

For candidates located in Spain, the base compensation range is EUR 94,025 - EUR 112,830. Actual compensation may vary based on level, experience, and skillset as assessed throughout the interview process. Equity participation and comprehensive benefits are also part of the total package.
