Impulsespace is seeking a Staff Advanced Mission Concepts Engineer to join our team in Redondo Beach, California. In this full-time role, you'll transform ambitious customer requirements into technically feasible orbital transfer operations, defining the engineering path forward for some of the industry's most complex space missions.
About the Role
As a Staff Advanced Mission Concepts Engineer, you serve as the critical interface between customer vision and engineering execution. You'll evaluate mission feasibility from first principles, using deep orbital mechanics and systems-level analysis to validate whether proposed missions can succeed. Your work directly influences which opportunities Impulsespace pursues and shapes the technical foundation that guides our entire project team.
Core Duties
- Conduct rigorous physics-based analyses to establish mission feasibility and identify technical constraints
- Collaborate with Business Development to translate customer requirements into concrete engineering specifications
- Coordinate with our engineering teams to define system-level requirements and validate design approaches
- Develop detailed mission architectures that balance customer objectives with real-world orbital dynamics
- Engage directly with customers to discuss technical feasibility, trade-offs, and solution pathways
- Travel occasionally to customer sites and industry events as needed
What We're Looking For
- Proven expertise in orbital mechanics, trajectory analysis, and mission design
- Strong systems engineering background with experience defining complex technical requirements
- Track record of cross-functional collaboration and communicating technical concepts to non-engineering stakeholders
- Ability to think strategically about feasibility while remaining grounded in physical reality
- Comfortable with customer-facing technical discussions and presenting recommendations with confidence
- Advanced degree in aerospace engineering, physics, mathematics, or related discipline (or equivalent professional experience)
