Software Engineer, Backend

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential biotech client in London that is building automated laboratory infrastructure enabling AI-driven experimentation. This is a backend engineering role where your code directly controls physical laboratory equipment running molecular biology experiments at scale.

Our client operates at the intersection of software, robotics, and life sciences—reverse-engineering laboratory instruments into API-controllable systems and orchestrating complex experimental workflows. You'll be working on production systems that process large-scale biological data and make laboratory automation programmable.

Responsibilities

• Architect and build backend systems that control laboratory robotics and instrumentation
• Design data pipelines to process heterogeneous experimental data from physical instruments including binding kinetics, enzyme activity measurements, and chromatography readings
• Build APIs that integrate laboratory hardware, scheduling systems, and robotics into cohesive workflows
• Translate complex molecular biology protocols into reliable, scalable software systems
• Collaborate with scientists and automation engineers to ensure software meets the precision requirements of biological experimentation
• Ensure system reliability and observability across distributed hardware and software components

What We're Looking For

• Strong experience designing and building production backend systems in any modern language (the client uses Python and TypeScript with Postgres)
• Proven experience building data pipelines and processing infrastructure at scale
• Solid understanding of API design and systems integration, particularly connecting software to hardware or external systems
• Genuine interest in biology and physical-world applications of software (no prior biology background required)
• High autonomy and ownership mindset—you identify priorities and execute independently
• Pragmatic engineering approach focused on solving problems well rather than specific tools or technologies
• Experience using AI coding tools while maintaining strong fundamentals in software architecture and code quality
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-growth environment
