About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential cleantech organization at the forefront of sustainable materials recovery in Europe. They are scaling proven battery recycling technology from pilot operations to full industrial deployment across multiple sites. We're seeking a Senior Process Engineer to lead the technical design, scale-up, and commissioning of critical extraction and separation processes as they expand their manufacturing footprint.

This role sits at the intersection of process development, industrial engineering, and plant commissioning. You'll translate operational data into robust design criteria, challenge vendor assumptions, and ensure future facilities are built on validated engineering fundamentals rather than theoretical models alone.

Responsibilities

• Own process design activities for next-generation facilities, including PFDs, P&IDs, mass and energy balances, process descriptions, and equipment specifications
• Translate pilot and industrial operating data into reliable scale-up assumptions and design criteria for capacity expansions
• Perform process calculations and equipment sizing based on validated plant data rather than theoretical assumptions
• Serve as technical reference for critical extraction and post-processing steps, applying chemical engineering fundamentals to optimize yield, purity, and stability
• Evaluate operational and experimental data to build and validate mass balances and process models; identify gaps between expected and actual performance
• Define data collection requirements to support future scale-up decisions and guide analytics teams to maintain physical and chemical reality in models
• Participate in FATs/SATs, commissioning activities, and process performance validation for new equipment and plant expansions
• Develop acceptance and validation criteria based on original design intent; evaluate commissioning data to confirm installed systems meet calculated targets
• Translate process design into clear Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), operating envelopes, and process documentation
• Participate actively in HAZOPs, LOPAs, and other process safety reviews to identify and address risks during design phase
• Represent client's process requirements with external engineering partners and equipment suppliers; prepare and review technical specifications and vendor proposals
• Challenge unsupported assumptions and over-engineered solutions; ensure equipment is correctly sized for actual process needs

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications:

• Degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or related technical field
• Ideally 5+ years of process engineering experience in chemical, hydrometallurgy, battery, mining, minerals, recycling, or related processing industries
• Strong experience with process design and scale-up, including PFDs, P&IDs, mass/energy balances, and equipment sizing
• Proven ability to work with industrial datasets and translate operational data into engineering models and decisions
• Experience supporting commissioning and process validation of industrial equipment or plants
• Familiarity with process safety methodologies such as HAZOP and LOPA
• Ability to move between detailed calculations, engineering documentation, and actual plant operations
• Strong communicator able to work effectively across R&D, Engineering, Operations, suppliers, and EPC partners
• Fluent English required; German is a plus

Preferred Experience:

• Specific expertise in graphite and lithium extraction and post-processing
• Experience with solid-liquid separation, precipitation, flotation, hydrometallurgy, or mineral processing
• Track record of critically reviewing vendor proposals and confidently challenging technical assumptions
• Experience representing technical requirements with EPCs, engineering contractors, and equipment vendors throughout project execution
