Senior Engineering Manager

We are representing a confidential EdTech organization in their search for a Senior Engineering Manager based in London. Our client operates at the intersection of AI adoption and workforce transformation, and this role sits at the heart of their technical strategy—leading the engineering teams responsible for diagnosing learner and employer needs, prescribing learning pathways, and managing the complex eligibility and onboarding systems that serve thousands of organizations.

This is a rare opportunity to solve an adoption-layer problem that most organizations ignore: what happens when AI capability meets real people who need to change how they work. You'll lead full-stack teams building AI-native, event-driven systems with genuine commercial and regulatory impact.

Responsibilities

• Own delivery, technical direction, and team health across the diagnosis-and-prescription service estate—covering learner assessment, eligibility logic, recommendation engines, and onboarding flows
• Lead teams building AI-heavy services including retrieval-augmented generation, LLM-scored assessments, and intelligent recommendation systems that turn raw signal into actionable learning paths
• Manage systems with financial and regulatory blast radius, ensuring eligibility and prescription logic operates safely at scale
• Continue platform modernization: carve domain logic out of legacy monoliths into dedicated services while scaling newer AI-native products from beta to production
• Coach and grow your team—hire well, create individualized growth plans, establish high-performing AI-native operating rhythms, and ensure performance conversations are never surprises
• Stay hands-on: whiteboard distributed system designs, review event schemas and API contracts, and write production code when it's the fastest way to de-risk or unblock
• Drive predictable delivery using cycle time, change failure rate, and MTTR metrics to balance shipping speed with technical safety on load-bearing systems
• Establish AI-native engineering practices across discovery, build, and review workflows, then share proven approaches across the broader engineering organization
• Partner directly with Product, Design, and go-to-market teams to translate learner and customer behavior into technical direction

What We're Looking For

Required experience and skills:

• Proven engineering management experience leading full-stack teams shipping production software, with genuine technical depth to review architecture and challenge design decisions
• Direct experience shipping AI features to real users in production—not side projects or prototypes—and operating those systems at scale
• Strong proficiency in Python and TypeScript (or willingness to learn TypeScript quickly)
• Production experience with React/Next.js (App Router, React Server Components, server actions), tRPC or GraphQL, Node/Express
• PostgreSQL at scale via ORMs, with disciplined migration practices on large, live schemas
• Event-driven systems experience using message buses (RabbitMQ or similar)—versioned events, idempotency, backward-compatible schema evolution
• High engineering maturity as second nature: strict typing, layered testing, feature flags, architecture decision records, CI/CD pipelines, comprehensive observability
• AI-native delivery in practice: daily use of Claude Code, Cursor, or similar tools, with understanding of context management, model selection, tool design, and token economics that separate prototypes from affordable production systems

Differentiators:

• Experience with go-to-market or acquisition-funnel systems where onboarding and eligibility meet real customers
• Pragmatic strangler-pattern migration experience: running legacy monoliths alongside greenfield edge-native products simultaneously
• Accessibility and UX as defaults on learner-facing surfaces, not afterthoughts

This role is not a fit if: You prefer running ceremonies over staying close to system design and code. You view AI tooling as a productivity tweak rather than a fundamental shift in how teams work. You tend to absorb unrealistic scope rather than renegotiating it openly when needed.

Technical environment: TypeScript core stack (React/Next.js, Node) with PostgreSQL and RabbitMQ event backbone, plus Python and Elixir services. GitHub, CircleCI, Datadog. AI-assisted development is first-class practice. You'll lead full-stack engineers with Python/Elixir specialists, reporting to senior engineering leadership with regular calibration across a peer group of engineering managers.
