Senior Backend Engineer

About This Role

We are representing a well-funded Berlin-based technology company building an advanced automation platform for enterprise operations. Our client is transforming how large organizations handle complex multi-system workflows, with integrations spanning major enterprise software platforms and clients in the billions of dollars in revenue.

We're seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to own the technical foundation of the platform—someone who can set architectural direction, raise the bar on system reliability, and serve as the go-to technical authority for the engineering team.

Responsibilities

• Own backend architecture end-to-end: service design, API contracts, reliability standards, and long-term technical strategy
• Serve as the technical anchor for the engineering team—the person who understands how all components interact and guides architectural decisions
• Establish engineering standards for code quality, service boundaries, and shared abstractions across the codebase
• Design production-grade Python services with failure handling built in: retries, timeouts, graceful degradation, and recovery paths
• Build and maintain durable workflows using Temporal for long-running processes, async coordination, and saga patterns
• Own workflow observability and health monitoring to detect degraded or stuck processes before customer impact
• Manage idempotency, failure modes, and replay semantics across complex distributed workflows
• Handle workflow versioning to evolve systems without breaking running instances
• Build operational tooling for early regression detection, alerting, runbooks, and on-call readiness
• Identify and address technical debt before it compounds; propose thoughtful refactoring strategies

What We're Looking For

• 6+ years building and operating production backend systems in Python with clear ownership of services beyond feature delivery
• Deep Python expertise: You make deliberate choices about async vs sync patterns, framework selection, and performance tradeoffs with strong technical opinions
• Production experience with Temporal or comparable workflow engines: You understand durable execution models, not just basic task queues
• Reliability-first design approach: Idempotency, retry logic, and observability are integral to your design process from day one
• End-to-end ownership mentality: You proactively identify gaps and problems, hold the complete system picture, and continuously improve what you touch
• A distinctive technical spike: The team is looking for someone who brings exceptional depth in an underinvested area—whether that's workflow orchestration, data infrastructure, distributed systems, or specialized domain knowledge. You should be able to clearly articulate your standout expertise and why it creates meaningful impact
• Located in or willing to relocate to Berlin, Germany
