SCADA Engineering Manager (m/f/d) – Utility Scale PV & BESS

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential renewable energy organization seeking a SCADA Engineering Manager to take technical ownership of SCADA, monitoring, plant control, and communication systems for utility-scale photovoltaic and battery energy storage projects. Based in Saarbrücken, this role combines technical leadership with stakeholder coordination—ensuring systems are correctly specified, integrated, tested, and commissioned across the complete project lifecycle.

You will serve as the central technical interface between engineering teams, project delivery, customers, grid operators, and external suppliers, translating requirements across these groups and ensuring that SCADA, plant protection control, and communication systems operate reliably when plants reach commissioning.

Responsibilities

• Take technical ownership of SCADA, monitoring, plant control, and communication systems from specification through commissioning
• Manage external suppliers and hold them accountable for correct specification, integration, and delivery of SCADA and plant protection control solutions
• Act as the primary technical interface coordinating engineering, project teams, customers, grid operators, and suppliers
• Oversee testing and commissioning activities for SCADA, plant protection control, and communication systems
• Coordinate engineering and project activities across the full plant lifecycle, ensuring technical issues are resolved before handover
• Translate grid operator requirements, customer expectations, and supplier solutions into actionable project deliverables
• Drive technical topics to resolution with a strong ownership mentality

What We're Looking For

• Degree in electrical engineering, automation engineering, control engineering, mechatronics, computer engineering, or comparable technical discipline
• Several years of professional experience in SCADA, industrial automation, power plant control, renewable energy, or grid integration
• Experience with utility-scale photovoltaic systems, battery energy storage systems, substations, or other power generation assets highly desirable
• Strong understanding of SCADA architectures, industrial communication networks, and plant control systems
• Familiarity with communication protocols such as Modbus TCP/RTU, IEC 60870-5-104, IEC 61850, OPC UA, or comparable standards
• Understanding of active power, reactive power, voltage, and grid control concepts is advantageous
• Experience working with grid operators, utilities, or grid compliance requirements highly desirable
• Proven track record coordinating external technical suppliers and managing complex system interfaces
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills across hardware, software, and communication systems
• Confident communicator capable of engaging effectively with engineers, customers, suppliers, and grid operators
• Structured working style with the ability to drive technical issues to resolution
• Willingness to travel occasionally to project sites, suppliers, or customer locations
• Valid driving licence (Category B)
• Fluent English required; German language skills strongly preferred
• Proactive, solution-oriented approach with professional expertise applied effectively in day-to-day activities
