Project Development Manager – Renewable Energy

Tumaini Consulting is hiring a Project Development Manager – Renewable Energy for a full-time position based in Cape Town City Centre, Cape Town Region. You'll drive renewable energy project development from inception through to commercial maturity, overseeing the technical, commercial, and regulatory dimensions that define success in the sector.

What This Role Involves

As Project Development Manager for renewable energy projects, you'll shepherd initiatives through critical early and mid-stage gates, translating opportunity into reality. You'll balance technical feasibility with commercial viability whilst navigating the regulatory landscape that governs energy infrastructure in South Africa. This is hands-on work that demands rigour, relationship-building, and the ability to solve complex problems across disciplines.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

• Lead pre-construction and development phases, including site assessment, resource evaluation, and preliminary design work
• Manage stakeholder engagement with landowners, utilities, regulators, and community representatives
• Prepare and shepherd Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA) and environmental authorisation applications
• Track grid connection applications, water-use licencing, and other mandatory permitting processes
• Develop project timelines, budgets, and feasibility models; track milestones and flag risks early
• Liaise with engineers, financiers, and legal advisors to ensure technical, financial, and legal alignment
• Maintain project documentation and ensure compliance with company and regulatory standards

Skills & Qualifications

• Relevant tertiary qualification in engineering, energy studies, environmental science, or project management
• Demonstrated experience in renewable energy project development or related infrastructure delivery
• Strong understanding of South African energy regulation, grid connection processes, and environmental permitting
• Proven project management capability: ability to track multiple workstreams, set realistic timelines, and deliver to schedule
• Excellent stakeholder communication and negotiation skills
• Proficiency with project planning tools and financial modelling
• Ability to work independently and within a team-based consulting environment
