Privacy & Cybersecurity, Sr. Counsel

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential healthcare organization in their search for a Senior Counsel specializing in Privacy and Cybersecurity. This role sits within the legal function and serves as a critical privacy advisor to business leaders across the enterprise. You'll work on sophisticated privacy matters spanning HIPAA, state comprehensive privacy laws, data breach response, and commercial data agreements.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the functional privacy expert, advising business leaders and commercial counsel on data protection, data retention, data usage, security, and breach response matters
• Review and negotiate data privacy agreements, data processing agreements, business associate agreements, and other privacy-related contract provisions
• Advise on incident response protocols and data breach reporting processes in collaboration with the VP of Privacy
• Partner with IT Security teams to align IT security initiatives with privacy compliance programs
• Provide practical guidance to cross-functional teams on complex privacy requirements for major projects
• Assist with managing legislative and regulatory inquiries, investigations, or administrative actions related to privacy and data security
• Review and update policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable data privacy laws and regulations
• Advise on the design and delivery of privacy training programs
• Monitor state, federal, and international privacy legislative developments and assess impact on the organization
• Support M&A activity, divestitures, and joint ventures as they relate to privacy matters

What We're Looking For

• Juris Doctorate degree required
• Active license to practice law in Ohio or another U.S. state
• 8–12 years of legal experience, preferably in privacy and cybersecurity
• Extensive knowledge of U.S. privacy and cybersecurity laws, including HIPAA, comprehensive state privacy laws, state breach notification statutes, and consumer protection and employment-related privacy regulations
• Knowledge of international privacy and data security laws, including GDPR, preferred
• CIPP (US) certification preferred
• Strong relationship-building and collaboration skills with the ability to work across departments and levels
• Solution-oriented mindset with the ability to prioritize and deliver key initiatives
• Ability to assess legal, practical, and business risks quickly in a fast-paced environment and make sound judgments under tight deadlines
• Excellent problem-solving, written and oral communication, and interpersonal skills
• Ability to provide concise, business-focused legal advice with practical and creative solutions
