About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential biotechnology organization that is building advanced laboratory automation infrastructure. This is a founding-team software engineering role where you will design and build the core systems that orchestrate physical laboratory operations, capture experimental data with full provenance, and deliver structured outputs for AI and scientific workflows.

You will work directly with founding engineers, scientists, and automation specialists to build software that controls real instruments, schedules laboratory workflows, and ensures every experimental run is captured as high-quality, traceable data. This role sits at the intersection of distributed systems, data infrastructure, and physical automation—unusual territory where your code moves liquid, manages robotic systems, and produces scientific datasets rather than SaaS metrics.

Responsibilities

• Build production services across the execution and observation layers of laboratory automation software
• Design and implement APIs that translate customer intent into versioned, executable laboratory workflows
• Develop orchestration systems that schedule and coordinate work across multiple instruments and robotic platforms
• Create data ingestion pipelines and ontology layers that structure experimental outputs into AI-ready datasets
• Implement provenance capture systems that log metadata, actions, and edits across every laboratory operation
• Build observability, monitoring, and resource-tracking systems that maintain a digital twin of laboratory state
• Own services end-to-end including reliability, on-call responsibilities, and production deployment
• Work directly with scientists running assays to understand requirements and validate implementations
• Ship your first production change within 30 days and own a complete service area within 90 days
• Help shape engineering culture, architecture decisions, and technical hiring as the team scales

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Proven track record shipping production systems that other teams or users depend on
• Strong generalist engineering skills across backend services, APIs, data pipelines, and basic frontend work
• Fluency in at least one language for building production services; adaptable to the team's stack
• Experience with rigorous CI/CD, automated testing, and production deployment practices
• Comfort with end-to-end ownership including architecture, reliability, observability, and on-call rotation
• Ability to work effectively with ambiguity, make decisions on partial information, and iterate quickly
• Experience building with AI coding agents and critical evaluation of generated code
• Big-picture thinking: understanding why you're building something and how it serves end users
• Commitment to raising the bar on code quality, system design, and engineering standards
• No biology background required—you will learn alongside scientists

Highly Valued:

• Experience building software that interfaces with physical systems: robotics, manufacturing, logistics, scientific instruments, industrial automation, or energy systems
• Work on orchestration engines, workflow schedulers, or distributed systems at scale
• Background in data-intensive systems: ontologies, knowledge graphs, data lineage, or provenance tracking
• Early-stage or founding engineer experience at a venture-backed startup

Work Environment:

• Hybrid role based in London with regular time working in the laboratory alongside instruments and scientists
• Office located at 20 Triton Street, adjacent to the physical lab environment
• Light meeting rhythm: Monday kickoff, Thursday all-hands, daily brief sync, quarterly offsites

Compensation details will be discussed during the screening process based on your experience level and the role's scope.
