Lead AI Engineer, Agentic Systems – Get A Job.ai AI Lab

About the Role

We are representing a confidential consulting organization operating an AI engineering lab focused on agentic systems for clients in financial services and energy. They need a Lead AI Engineer who can own architecture, elevate an existing engineering team, still write production code, and represent technical decisions directly to clients. This is a remote opportunity.

Responsibilities

Lead the engineering (approximately 40% of your time)

• Own end-to-end architecture for agentic AI solutions: orchestration, tool and function calling, memory and state, retrieval, evaluation, observability, plus cost and latency budgets
• Guide engineers through design reviews, pairing, and code review to raise the bar across the team
• Establish standards including reference architectures, agentic patterns, guardrails, testing and evaluation strategy, CI/CD for non-deterministic systems, and deployment topology
• Make build/buy/adapt decisions on frameworks, models, and platforms with long-term defensibility

Stay hands-on (approximately 30% of your time)

• Prototype quickly and build complex components yourself: challenging orchestration, evaluation harnesses, difficult integrations
• Take promising prototypes to production grade, covering reliability, monitoring, versioning, rollback, and human-in-the-loop where needed

Work with clients (approximately 30% of your time)

• Act as senior technical voice in solution discussions, workshops, and pitches, translating between business outcomes and system design
• Advise on AI architecture, platform strategy, model and vendor strategy, and governance as they apply to client operating models
• Produce authoritative content: reference architectures, points of view, whitepapers, and presentations at client forums and conferences

What We're Looking For

Essential qualifications

• 8+ years in software or data engineering, including genuine enterprise architecture experience designing systems that survived security review, complex integrations, and real production traffic
• Active coding skills with comfort opening pull requests in week two; strong Python or equivalent
• Demonstrable agentic AI experience: agentic loops and orchestration, tool use and function calling, multi-agent patterns, integration protocols, and critically, evaluation of AI solutions
• Depth on at least one major cloud platform with surrounding discipline: containers, infrastructure as code, observability, security
• Client presence: ability to hold a room of senior stakeholders, disagree respectfully, and explain trade-offs without retreating into jargon
• Genuine interest in developing other engineers; success in this role is partly measured by what the team can do without you

Valuable additions

• Domain experience in financial services or energy with understanding of how regulation impacts system design
• Consulting or client-facing delivery background
• Open-source contributions, publications, or speaking track record
• Hands-on AI governance, risk, or assurance work
• French language skills alongside fluent English
