Responsibilities
We are representing a confidential DevOps platform organization seeking an Intermediate Backend Engineer for their EMEA team. In this role, you will own backend features and improvements from problem clarification through production deployment and monitoring.
You will design, implement, test, and ship backend features working primarily in Ruby/Rails, Go, or other modern backend languages. Your work will include building and maintaining APIs, background jobs, integrations, and service functionality while managing data models, migrations, indexes, and query optimization.
You'll write maintainable, secure, and performant code with comprehensive automated test coverage spanning unit, integration, contract, and end-to-end testing where appropriate. Code review will be a core part of your workflow—both giving and receiving feedback on correctness, maintainability, security, performance, and operational risk.
You will investigate build, test, deployment, and runtime failures at the feature boundary, identify technical debt, propose practical improvements, and participate in on-call or operational support as your team's ownership model requires. Partnership with Product Management, Frontend, Infrastructure, and Security teams will be essential to delivering predictably while contributing to shared backend code quality.
The role requires leveraging AI productively in daily engineering work, validating what it produces, and understanding where its limitations matter. You'll work with minimal guidance in a remote, asynchronous environment, knowing when to seek help and communicating clearly with tenured engineers who will review your work and help you grow.
What We're Looking For
Required qualifications:
- Professional experience building and shipping production backend applications with strong programming, API, database, testing, debugging, and performance fundamentals
- Experience with Ruby/Rails, Go, or other modern backend languages—we value adaptability and learning ability over mastery of a single stack
- Demonstrated ability to take features from clarification through delivery and follow-up, working independently while seeking input at appropriate times
- Sound judgment regarding security, reliability, performance, maintainability, and operational risk
- Understanding of modular backend boundaries and the consequences of coupling
- Strong written communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively in remote, asynchronous environments
- Practical experience with AI coding tools, including the ability to review and correct generated code
Helpful experience:
- Production Go services, APIs, concurrency, profiling, or gRPC
- Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, CI/CD, or cloud deployment
- Rust, particularly for systems, security, performance, or platform work
- PostgreSQL, schema evolution, caching, queues, messaging, or event-driven workflows
- Observability using metrics, logs, traces, dashboards, and alerts
- Contributing to modular monoliths, bounded contexts, shared components, or independently operated services
