Our talent team is representing a confidential energy technology organization seeking a Head of Engineering - Optimisation & Control in London, UK. This senior leadership role sits at the intersection of advanced mathematical optimization, real-time grid infrastructure, and engineering team leadership.

Our client operates a platform that manages distributed energy assets at enormous scale, processing billions of data points daily to balance grid stability with renewable energy integration. The Optimisation domain is the algorithmic core of this system—responsible for real-time dispatch engines, predictive forecasting models, and solver algorithms that coordinate large asset portfolios across multiple markets.

Responsibilities

• Lead multiple engineering teams within the Optimisation chapter, managing both engineering managers and senior individual contributors
• Maintain and evolve the technical vision for optimization and control systems, ensuring scalability, cost-effectiveness, and alignment with product strategy
• Own the overall architecture for real-time dispatch engines and algorithmic solvers that handle complex multi-asset portfolios
• Balance demands for sophisticated mathematical models with strict requirements for reliability, low latency, and efficient cloud compute
• Drive the transition from bespoke optimization routines to a modular, performant optimization core with standard abstract layers
• Ensure appropriate quality, resilience, and system stability with specific focus on reducing incidents and improving operational reliability
• Prioritize technical debt strategically to support sustainable delivery at scale
• Influence across organizational boundaries, building trust with senior stakeholders and clarifying ownership in complex decision-making environments
• Coach and develop future leaders, providing direct feedback and creating psychological safety for teams

What We're Looking For

• Proven experience leading engineering teams across multiple squads or product areas in complex technical environments
• Strong collaborative mindset balancing customer outcomes, product strategy, technical quality, and people development
• Demonstrated ability to make sound trade-offs in ambiguous situations and help teams move forward despite uncertainty
• Track record of influencing beyond direct reporting lines and building consensus among senior stakeholders
• Bias for action: you identify recurring issues and transform them into concrete initiatives with clear owners, timelines, and success metrics
• Reliability in driving complex initiatives, managing dependencies, and ensuring follow-through on decisions
• Strong people leadership skills including coaching, performance management, delegation, and development of team members
• Experience with high-scale real-time systems, optimization algorithms, or complex distributed platforms is highly valued
• Right to work in the UK at time of application (visa sponsorship not available)
