About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential cleantech software company in München that is building the infrastructure for energy management across European businesses. This is a senior technical leadership role reporting directly to the founders—there is no CTO layer above this position. You will lead an 11-person engineering organization across two squads, set technical direction, and remain hands-on with architecture and code.
This is the most senior engineering seat in the company. You own both strategy and execution, serve on the leadership team, and are accountable for the full technical estate: a multi-tenant SaaS platform, IoT and metering integration, time-series data pipelines, forecasting and optimization services, and infrastructure automation.
Responsibilities
- Lead and grow an 11-person engineering team including two squad leads; own hiring, performance management, retention, and team development
- Set and execute the technical roadmap in partnership with Product and leadership; deliver quarterly commitments the business can depend on
- Own the architecture for cloud backend systems, time-series data platforms, IoT device integration, and ML/optimization services in production
- Manage production operations including on-call, incident response, postmortems, reliability, security posture, and cloud infrastructure costs
- Make build-versus-buy decisions and platform evolution calls that balance speed, scale, and technical debt
- Collaborate closely with Product, Data Science, and domain experts to build against real-world regulatory and operational constraints
- Maintain just-enough process for a lean team: reliability without the overhead of a 100-person organization
What We're Looking For
Must have:
- 3+ years leading engineering teams in a product company, including senior engineers or team leads, in a hands-on environment without layers of management to delegate through
- Proven track record owning delivery predictability and production reliability for customer-facing systems; you can describe measurable before-and-after impact
- Strong technical judgment in at least two of: cloud and distributed backend systems, multi-tenant SaaS, high-volume or time-series data pipelines, IoT and real-time telemetry, or ML/optimization in production—deep enough to make architecture calls and earn engineering trust
- Real experience running hiring and performance management: you have grown people and also managed people out when necessary
- Ownership mindset for incident management, security, and compliance—these are yours to lead, not delegate
- Clear written and spoken English; German is a strong advantage given the client's European customer base
Nice to have:
- Background in energy, industrial systems, or physical-world SaaS domains
- Experience as the most senior technical leader in a previous organization (CTO, VP Engineering, or equivalent)
Not required:
- Being the strongest coder on the team—you need to read code, make architectural decisions, and occasionally build, but this is a leadership role first
- A "Head of" title already—we care about what you have accomplished, not what it was called
