About This Opportunity

We are representing a respected nonprofit certification organization in the organic agriculture sector. Our client has spent over five decades supporting farmers, processors, and food producers committed to organic standards. This is a remote, full-time position based anywhere in the United States.

As a Farm Certification Specialist, you will join a mission-driven team responsible for reviewing compliance documentation for approximately 3,000 farm operations. You'll evaluate inspection reports, provide technical guidance on USDA National Organic Program (NOP) standards, and deliver exceptional customer service to certified operations and new applicants. This role does not involve fieldwork or on-site inspections.

Responsibilities

  • Review inspection reports and mid-year updates to assess compliance with USDA NOP and applicable organic standards
  • Make autonomous or semi-autonomous compliance decisions regarding land history, seed use, crop rotation, soil management, natural resource conservation, input materials, equipment, post-harvest handling, labeling, and recordkeeping
  • Provide timely written and verbal technical assistance to clients on regulatory topics and certification processes
  • Maintain accurate records in a complex proprietary database system
  • Communicate certification decisions and requirements clearly through email, letters, phone calls, and occasional virtual meetings
  • Manage your workload independently to meet team goals and review deadlines
  • Participate in ongoing professional development to maintain accreditation requirements
  • Attend staff meetings and monitor internal communications to stay current on regulatory updates
  • Support special projects as assigned by the Director of Farm Certification

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, agriculture, or related field; OR at least 3 years of relevant experience in agriculture, regulatory compliance, or a related area
  • Exceptional critical thinking skills with the ability to work independently within established procedures
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor messages to diverse audiences
  • Proven ability to communicate regulatory requirements with confidence and clarity
  • Strong organizational skills to prioritize competing tasks and manage multiple deadlines without sacrificing quality
  • Meticulous attention to detail with a track record of identifying and correcting errors
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Teams) and database programs
  • Experience delivering technical support with empathetic, professional customer service
  • Ability to de-escalate tense situations and maintain a helpful, courteous attitude
  • Collaborative team player who is receptive to constructive feedback

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of organic production practices or USDA NOP regulations through farm experience or work at an accredited certification agency
  • IOIA Organic Crop Inspector training or similar certification
  • Experience with complex database platforms
  • Background in environmental compliance, quality assurance, or food safety regulatory programs
  • Demonstrated success working remotely and collaborating with distributed teams
  • Commitment to anti-discrimination principles and willingness to engage in discussions about equity and inclusion

Schedule and Work Environment:

  • 8-hour workday falling between 7:00 am and 7:00 pm in your local time zone to ensure client availability during standard business hours (8:00 am – 5:00 pm Pacific Time)
  • Primarily desk-based computer work
  • Optional domestic travel for staff events or industry representation (typically not exceeding 10 days per year)
