Experimental Systems Engineer, Analytical Chemistry

Our client is tackling fundamental questions in molecular systems with practical applications spanning catalysis, synthesis, and programmable materials. They maintain the rigor of a research institute while moving at startup speed.

We're seeking an Experimental Systems Engineer with analytical chemistry expertise to join their Cambridge, MA team. You'll design and build novel measurement systems for real-time monitoring of liquid-phase chemical reactions.

Responsibilities

• Design and build prototype systems for monitoring aqueous chemical reaction networks in real time
• Work with CSTRs, flow reactors, microfluidic devices, pumps, valves, tubing, flow cells, and autosamplers
• Evaluate analytical technologies including Raman, UV-Vis, fluorescence, IR, NMR, LC-MS, HPLC, electrochemical sensing, and process probes
• Build Python-based tools for data acquisition, instrument control, signal processing, and visualization
• Combine continuous measurements with sampled analytical data to reconstruct chemical evolution over time
• Collaborate with chemists, enzymologists, computational scientists, and ML engineers to transform raw signals into actionable data

What We're Looking For

Essential experience (you'll have some but not necessarily all):

• Hands-on experience building experimental hardware or analytical setups
• Comfort with liquid handling systems: pumps, valves, tubing, flow cells, and troubleshooting leaks, bubbles, fouling, and drift
• Familiarity with analytical chemistry methods such as spectroscopy, chromatography, mass spectrometry, NMR, or electrochemical sensing
• Practical Python skills for data acquisition, analysis, plotting, and automation
• Ability to move fluidly between wet lab work, instrument manuals, notebooks, code, and physical prototyping
• Strong judgment about measurement validity and when experimental setups need redesign

Highly preferred:

• Experience with Raman, FTIR, UV-Vis, fluorescence, online NMR, LC-MS, HPLC, or MS workflows
• Lab automation: Arduino, Raspberry Pi, LabJack, NI DAQ, serial instrument control, autosamplers, or custom data logging
• Track record building fast prototypes in a startup, academic lab, instrument company, or hardware-intensive research environment
