Engineering Manager (Data Science)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential Series A analytics platform in Berlin. Our client is redefining how brands measure visibility across AI-powered search and discovery channels. With strong venture backing and rapid growth, they need an Engineering Manager to lead their data science function through the next phase of scale.

This is a hands-on leadership role where you'll build and mentor an elite team while personally owning the ML systems that drive core product capabilities. You'll work at the intersection of research, production engineering, and strategic product development in a high-growth environment.

Responsibilities

• Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing data science team as a player-coach, fostering technical excellence and empathetic leadership
• Personally design, train, deploy, and own business-critical machine learning models that power search analytics and recommendations
• Develop novel algorithms that analyze and reverse-engineer AI search behavior, turning technical insights into customer-facing product advantages
• Own the full ML lifecycle from research and experimentation through production deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement
• Architect scalable data and ML systems, making high-leverage decisions across pipelines, modeling approaches, evaluation frameworks, and serving infrastructure
• Write and review production-grade code, setting technical standards across the organization
• Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to executives, customers, and cross-functional partners

What We're Looking For

• 8+ years of professional data science experience, including 3+ years in leadership or managerial roles at high-growth startups or top-tier tech companies (Tech Lead, EM, SDM)
• Proven track record of building and shipping complex ML products from research to production in high-growth or frontier environments
• Demonstrable history of personally owning and scaling ML systems that deliver measurable business impact
• Exceptional command of Python and applied machine learning, with strong systems-level understanding of APIs, data pipelines, ML infrastructure, and production reliability
• Deep, first-principles understanding of LLMs and AI search systems, including rigorous evaluation and reasoning about model behavior
• Experience with cloud-native architectures (preferably GCP), using tools like FastAPI, Docker, and modern data platforms
• Outstanding judgment, communication, and problem-solving skills with the ability to lead through ambiguity
• Technical stack experience: Python, SQL, Pandas, NumPy, HuggingFace, PyTorch, TensorFlow, GCP, BigQuery, Postgres
• Familiarity with major AI models (OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, open-source alternatives)

Bonus points for: open-source contributions, public ML research or projects, conference publications or talks, founder experience, or TypeScript fluency.
