Director, Global Payroll

About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential identity and access management technology company seeking a Director, Global Payroll to lead payroll operations across 18 countries. This is a high-impact role reporting to the SVP Controller, overseeing a complex, multi-jurisdictional payroll function in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment.

We are looking for an experienced payroll leader who combines deep technical expertise in both US and international payroll with the strategic vision to scale operations, drive automation, and ensure flawless execution across all jurisdictions.

Responsibilities

Global Payroll Operations

• Oversee end-to-end global payroll operations across all entities, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant payroll processing
• Actively manage relationships with payroll managed services partners, including SLA adherence, KPIs, escalations, and quarterly business reviews
• Develop and execute a long-term global payroll strategy focused on scalability, standardization, process excellence, and risk mitigation
• Build and execute a payroll automation roadmap to drive efficiency and system enhancement
• Lead payroll implementations supporting global expansion, including new country setup, EOR management, and M&A integration activities

Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Lead and develop a high-performing global payroll team, fostering accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement
• Serve as escalation point for complex payroll matters and employee inquiries
• Partner with Accounting and Equity Administration on accruals, reconciliations, variance analysis, equity compensation processing, and financial reporting
• Collaborate with Treasury on payroll funding, global cash forecasting, and new country setup activities
• Work closely with HR teams on employee lifecycle, statutory benefits, and related processes

Compliance & Risk Management

• Oversee accurate administration of complex compensation elements including salary changes, bonuses, commissions, equity-related payments, leaves, deductions, garnishments, and severance
• Ensure adherence to all local, state, federal, and international laws and regulations
• Manage payroll-related compliance activities including withholdings, payroll tax deposits, multi-state registrations, audits, and government inquiries
• Oversee year-end payroll reporting requirements globally, including W-2s and comparable international forms
• Proactively identify and mitigate payroll-related risks; maintain robust internal controls

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications:

• 15+ years of progressive payroll leadership with deep technical command of both multi-state US and international payroll environments
• Proven success leading globally dispersed teams of 5+ employees through periods of significant growth and change
• Strong operational and problem-solving capabilities with commitment to accuracy and continuous improvement
• Self-starter who thrives in high-velocity environments with ability to manage multiple complex workstreams simultaneously
• Commitment to providing an exceptional, high-trust employee experience

Ideal Additional Qualifications:

• Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designation or equivalent global certification
• Highly proficient in interpreting and researching local and international rules and regulations across EMEA/APAC/North America
• Strong understanding of statutory deductions, tax rates, social security requirements, and benefits regulations internationally
• Proficiency with UKG and CloudPay; familiarity with Smartsheets, Google Sheets, and AI-enabled tools
• Public company experience managing payroll complexities related to equity (RSUs and ESPP) and SOX control requirements

Pay

This role offers a competitive compensation package. Our client has indicated a base salary range of $180,000 - $210,000 plus variable bonus. Final compensation will be determined by knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience.
