Data Scientist – Defence

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential enterprise AI software organization in their search for a Data Scientist to support critical defence programmes in London. This is a frontline role on some of the most consequential AI initiatives in UK and European defence today. You will help design and deploy AI solutions that keep aircraft and platforms mission-ready through predictive maintenance, sharpen decision-making through digital targeting capabilities, and sustain operations through intelligent logistics in contested and degraded environments.

These are live programmes with real operational stakes, delivered into demanding, secure settings across the UK MOD, NATO, and allied European partners. Some travel to customer and partner locations should be expected.

Responsibilities

• Lead the research, design, implementation, and deployment of machine learning algorithms, intelligent agents, and optimization solutions for enterprise applications
• Enable customers to build their own AI applications through direct technical collaboration and guidance
• Contribute to the design and implementation of new platform features and capabilities
• Analyze model performance across asset fleets, diagnose issues such as low risk scores or false positives, and recommend hyperparameter adjustments
• Collaborate with data and subject matter experts to seek, understand, validate, interpret, and correctly use new data elements

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications:

• MS or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Statistics, or equivalent fields
• Applied AI experience including generative AI, agentic solutions, regression and classification, supervised and unsupervised learning
• Strong mathematical background in linear algebra, calculus, probability and statistics
• Experience with scalable machine learning approaches such as MapReduce and streaming
• Ability to drive projects independently and work effectively in team environments
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Smart, motivated, can-do attitude with a drive to make a difference

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with JavaScript and prototyping languages such as Python and R; Java and Scala experience is a plus
• Portfolio of projects demonstrating your work (GitHub repositories, published papers, etc.)

Security Clearance Requirement:

This role supports defence programmes that require UK Security Clearance. Candidates must hold, or be able to obtain and maintain, SC/NATO clearance. Eligibility is set by the contracting authority and typically requires a minimum of five years' continuous UK residence.
