About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential research organization at the intersection of computational biology and fundamental science. Our client is tackling one of science's deepest questions through a rigorous, interdisciplinary approach that combines AI engineering, computational methods, and experimental work. This is a rare opportunity to drive independent research that bridges geochemistry, biochemistry, and the evolution of molecular systems.

The role is based in Cambridge, MA, working alongside AI researchers, computational chemists, and laboratory scientists in a small, highly focused team.

Responsibilities

• Lead an independent research programme focused on the computational study of early catalytic systems and molecular evolution
• Investigate questions spanning prebiotic chemistry, chemical reaction networks, thermodynamic constraints, and enzymatic evolution
• Develop models and simulations that connect geochemical processes to biochemical function
• Produce publication-quality research and communicate findings across disciplines
• Collaborate with machine learning engineers, computational chemists, and experimental scientists

What We're Looking For

Essential:

• PhD in computational biology, computational chemistry, systems biology, chemical engineering, or closely related field
• Publication record demonstrating research impact
• Deep expertise in at least one of: chemical reaction network modelling; machine learning for molecular systems; computational biochemistry (quantum mechanics, molecular dynamics, reaction or catalysis modelling); evolutionary modelling (phylogenetics, ancestral reconstruction, population genetics); non-equilibrium thermodynamics or statistical physics
• Proven ability to drive a research programme independently from question formulation through to insight and publication

Highly Preferred:

• Cross-disciplinary fluency across multiple technical areas listed above
• Track record of self-directed, independent research
