Community Engineer (multiple roles and seniority levels)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential open source technology organization in their search for Community Engineers at multiple seniority levels. Our client is a pioneer in the Linux ecosystem, and this role offers you the chance to work at the intersection of technical excellence and community enablement on a global scale.

This is a fully remote position open to candidates worldwide. You'll be part of a team that facilitates community-led initiatives, bridges the gap between volunteer contributors and internal engineering teams, and helps build sustainable, thriving open source communities.

Responsibilities

• Create high-quality content to promote and support community initiatives through blog posts, social media, and other channels
• Collaborate with community leaders and contributors to identify solutions to community challenges
• Nurture and facilitate community contributions to open source projects
• Engage with the community through forums, chat platforms, social media, and at conferences
• Support volunteer developers by addressing concerns and helping them create successful tools and projects
• Lead complex, multi-disciplinary programs from conception through launch
• Coordinate between community interests and internal product, engineering, and marketing teams
• Represent the organization and community at speaking engagements, conferences, and events
• Ensure community processes are efficient, well-documented, and sustainable
• Travel 2-4 weeks per year for internal and external events (with opportunities for additional travel)

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Passion for technology, open source software, and Linux
• Experience with developer tools and open source projects
• Clear public record of accomplishments (talks, blog posts, GitHub contributions, social media presence, etc.)
• Experience working with open source communities and understanding volunteer contributor workflows
• Technical program management experience with excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
• Interest and experience with some of the following: Linux (kernel or userspace), DevOps, software development, testing and QA, package management, container technology
• Ability to work autonomously and take full ownership of objectives
• Flexibility with time and comfort working with new technology in a fast-paced environment
• Strong soft skills: curiosity, flexibility, articulation, accountability, passion, and self-motivation

Preferred qualifications:

• Community management experience
• Developer advocacy experience
• Software development background
• Track record of contributions to major open source communities

Compensation details will be discussed during the screening process and are based on geographical location, experience, and performance.
