Backend Engineer (AI Agents/Workflows)

We are representing a confidential industrial technology company operating across multiple European markets. Our client is building AI-driven solutions that transform how global materials trade and distribution work at scale. They combine modern software engineering with cutting-edge AI agent workflows to automate complex commercial processes.

Our talent team is seeking a Backend Engineer with experience in AI integrations to join their technical organization in Berlin. You'll work on systems that power intelligent automation across sourcing, pricing, logistics, and customer operations.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain backend services that integrate AI and machine learning capabilities into production systems
• Build clean, maintainable, and reusable code with a focus on scalability and performance
• Develop and optimize APIs that power AI-driven features and workflows
• Collaborate with frontend engineers to connect user-facing experiences with AI-enabled backend logic
• Implement and improve distributed systems and data pipelines
• Work with LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini) to build intelligent workflows and automation
• Participate in code reviews, knowledge-sharing sessions, and architecture discussions
• Stay current with emerging AI technologies and backend best practices

What We're Looking For

• 3–5 years of experience as a backend or full-stack engineer, with exposure to AI/ML integrations
• Solid programming skills in Java (Spring Boot) and familiarity with Python for data processing or AI integration
• Experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL or similar) and writing efficient queries
• Comfortable working with cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred) and CI/CD tooling
• Understanding of distributed systems, event-driven architecture, and microservices
• Interest or hands-on experience building AI-enabled products (e.g., working with OpenAI API, fine-tuning models, or prompt engineering)
• Familiarity with tech stack elements such as: Python, LangGraph, LLM APIs, AWS, GitHub Actions, Node.js, Java 21, Postgres, Kinesis, Terraform, TypeScript, NextJS, React
• Strong communicator who can explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Proactive, collaborative, and eager to contribute ideas and improvements
• Authorization to work in Germany
