AI Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a well-funded Berlin-based startup building next-generation data infrastructure for AI systems in production. Our client is backed by top-tier investors and founded by serial entrepreneurs with over a decade of experience shipping data products at scale.

We're looking for an AI Engineer to join their core team and shape how intelligent systems remember, retrieve, and act on information in real-world environments.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement memory systems for AI agents, including retrieval, ranking, context assembly, and long-term memory capabilities
• Develop systems for entity resolution, temporal reasoning, provenance tracking, and knowledge representation
• Build agent capabilities that combine reasoning with reliable tool use and action execution
• Design comprehensive evaluations for retrieval quality, agent behavior, and end-to-end task performance
• Investigate production failures using traces, datasets, and user feedback to drive system improvements
• Experiment with semantic search, graph-based retrieval, reranking, trajectory analysis, and selective replay approaches
• Implement permission-aware retrieval systems that respect user access controls and organizational policies
• Optimize reliability, latency, and cost of AI systems running in production
• Collaborate directly with founders and engineering team on product direction and technical architecture

What We're Looking For

• Strong software engineering skills with proven experience building production systems
• Practical hands-on experience with LLMs, agents, retrieval systems, or applied machine learning
• Proficiency in Python and familiarity with modern backend and data infrastructure technologies
• Solid understanding of embeddings, vector search, retrieval-augmented generation, evaluation methods, and prompting techniques
• Experimental mindset: you form hypotheses, build prototypes, measure results, and iterate quickly
• Ability to navigate ambiguous problems and translate research ideas into reliable product features
• Strong product judgment and genuine interest in how people use AI systems in practice
• Clear written and verbal communication skills in English
