Senior Software Engineer, Underwriting

Coalition, Inc. is hiring a full-time Senior Software Engineer, Underwriting to design and maintain the backend systems powering cyber insurance decisions for businesses across Canada. You will architect the platform connecting security intelligence, statistical models, and machine learning to evaluate and manage digital risk at scale.

Role Overview

As a senior engineer on our Underwriting team, you'll architect and develop the backend services that form the core of our cyber insurance decisioning engine. Your work will connect security data, statistical models, and machine learning capabilities to evaluate risk and automate critical workflows. This is a highly collaborative position, requiring close partnership with underwriters, data scientists, and fellow engineers to evolve our platform as we scale.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

• Build and operate scalable backend services using Python and/or Go, applying industry-standard frameworks and best practices
• Integrate statistical and machine learning models into production systems to assess, price, and continuously monitor cyber risk
• Establish monitoring, alerting, and observability infrastructure to maintain system reliability and enable quick incident response
• Produce clean, thoroughly tested code with strong unit and integration test coverage to support rapid, confident deployments
• Lead medium and large projects end-to-end, providing technical direction and mentoring to other engineers on the team
• Participate in architectural decisions that prioritize pragmatism, scalability, and system decoupling
• Streamline underwriting workflows and decisioning automation for internal teams

What We're Looking For

• Proven experience building and running backend APIs and services in Python and/or Go using common frameworks
• Hands-on knowledge of REST APIs and at least one additional protocol or format such as gRPC or GraphQL
• Proficiency with version control systems such as Git
• Experience deploying and managing services on AWS or equivalent cloud infrastructure
• Familiarity with observability platforms such as Sentry, Datadog, Jaeger, Zipkin, Graylog, or AppDynamics
• Background working in agile environments with collaboration tools like Atlassian, GitHub, or GitLab
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent professional experience
• Demonstrated ability to independently own and execute projects of moderate scope, make sound technical choices, and guide junior engineers
