Lead Software Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential fintech organization that is building production-ready AI systems for financial institutions across the UK. Our client has achieved significant industry recognition and works with major banking partners to deliver intelligent workflows that transform how financial services operate.

We're seeking a Lead Software Engineer to serve as the senior technical voice within a product squad, working alongside the Engineering Manager to drive technical direction and engineering excellence. This is a hands-on leadership role where you'll own architectural decisions, mentor engineers, and set the standard for AI-powered development across the organization.

Responsibilities

• Set technical direction for your squad, owning architectural decisions and managing technical risk while representing engineering perspectives at senior technical forums
• Drive adoption of AI coding tools across the full software development lifecycle, from planning and design through code review, testing, and deployment
• Deliver production-grade code across the full stack, including Node.js or Python backends, event-driven AWS architecture, and React frontends
• Mentor and develop engineers across AI and full-stack domains through code reviews, design documents, and collaborative pairing
• Collaborate with platform teams to consume shared capabilities and contribute reusable patterns rather than building one-off solutions
• Ensure all deliverables are compliant-by-design, auditable, and built to the standards required for FCA-regulated financial services

What We're Looking For

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, including significant time building and operating AI systems in production environments
• Demonstrated technical leadership: you've set direction, made architectural decisions, mentored others, and influenced how teams build software
• Strong hands-on AI/LLM expertise including prompt engineering, RAG, model evaluation, and agent frameworks with production deployment experience
• Deep expertise in TypeScript and Node.js with solid React experience; Python skills are beneficial
• Cloud-native development proficiency on AWS including serverless architectures, event-driven systems, and Lambda
• Genuine curiosity about AI advancement combined with sound judgment to evaluate emerging technologies
• Strong instinct for responsible engineering with focus on auditability, compliance, and downstream impact
• UK-based candidates only; this is a remote-first position
