Senior Backend Engineer – Golang

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential fintech organization in Berlin, Germany, seeking a Senior Backend Engineer with strong Golang expertise. This is a greenfield opportunity within a newly formed squad focused on building critical infrastructure for merchant attribution, commission automation, and lifecycle intelligence systems.

You'll join at the foundational stage, helping establish architectural patterns, data models, and engineering standards that will power sales operations and merchant analytics at scale. This role sits at the intersection of backend engineering, data systems, and business operations—ideal for engineers who want end-to-end ownership in a high-trust, auditable environment.

Responsibilities

• Build data aggregation systems to attribute merchant acquisition across multiple channels and touchpoints
• Design and implement automated commission calculation workflows for field sales, telesales, partnerships, and referral programs
• Develop a centralized Lifecycle Event Log storing curated merchant events (signups, product usage, verification, purchases) used across attribution, recommendations, support, and sales
• Create internal backoffice tools and APIs enabling sales teams to monitor commissions, manage portfolios, modify plans, and resolve disputes
• Establish API contracts, schemas, and integration patterns with clear versioning and documentation for cross-team adoption
• Define best practices for testing, observability, and incident response within a newly formed engineering squad
• Leverage AI and agentic coding tools strategically to scaffold services, generate tests, and draft documentation while maintaining full accountability for production code

What We're Looking For

• Strong backend engineering experience in Go, or deep expertise in typed languages with readiness to ramp up quickly in Golang
• Proven experience designing APIs and distributed systems with well-defined contracts, versioning strategies, and integration patterns
• Fluency with relational and analytical databases (PostgreSQL, Snowflake) and the judgment to select the right tool for each use case
• Hands-on experience building Kafka-based event-driven systems, including event sourcing and change data capture (CDC) patterns
• Background in auditable, high-trust domains such as fintech, payments, or similarly regulated environments where traceability is critical
• Track record building services from scratch in greenfield or early-stage teams with minimal prior context—energized by ambiguity rather than unsettled by it
• Commitment to testing, observability, and incident response as first-class engineering concerns, not afterthoughts
• Resourcefulness and adaptability with end-to-end ownership mindset, comfortable doing more with less as priorities evolve
• Ability to bridge technical and non-technical stakeholders, translating ambiguous problems into clear engineering deliverables and explaining trade-offs to both engineers and sales teams
• Pragmatic decision-making—knowing when "good enough" ships value and when higher rigor is genuinely required
• Mentorship instincts that elevate team standards and capabilities, not just individual output
