Senior BigQuery Data Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential fintech organization in their search for a Senior BigQuery Data Engineer to join their Data Platform Team in London. Our client is building a world-class data platform that powers products and analytics at scale, supporting petabyte-level volumes of data across hundreds of teams.

The Data Platform team ensures internal stakeholders can efficiently collect, store, process, and utilize data to build reports and products that solve business problems. The focus is on maximizing time spent solving business challenges while minimizing technical overhead around implementation, deployment, and monitoring.

The core technology stack includes AWS and GCP, leveraging Kafka for message transport, Flink for real-time processing, Datahub as the catalog, BigQuery as the warehouse, Airflow (GCP Composer) for scheduling, DBT for data transformation, and Montecarlo for monitoring.

Responsibilities

• Build enablement components across the platform and monitor and support the capabilities offered to internal teams
• Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation for data systems and processes
• Participate in code and design reviews, providing constructive feedback to colleagues
• Automate workflows and processes wherever possible to create a self-sustaining platform
• Stay current with the latest data and streaming engineering technologies and trends
• Mentor junior team members and provide guidance and best practices to application teams
• Build lightweight tooling and reference patterns to enable upstream teams to publish and manipulate data easily
• Implement infrastructure enabling end users to build, host, monitor, and deploy their own applications
• Provide consultancy across the technology organization to drive platform adoption and unlock use cases
• Promote data quality and governance as core platform principles

What We're Looking For

• Strong engineering background with a proven track record of implementing and owning components of a data platform
• Extensive experience with cloud data warehousing technologies, particularly BigQuery optimization and FinOps
• Experience working with modern cloud-based stacks such as AWS, Azure, or GCP
• Excellent SQL skills with the ability to optimize complex queries
• Strong programming skills in at least one of: Python, Java, Scala, or C#
• Experience mentoring colleagues and raising the technical bar across teams
• Collaborative approach with the ability to partner on solving complex problems
• Strong listening skills and ability to understand underlying problems before proposing solutions
• Demonstrated ability to drive best practices across teams and organizations
• Thought leadership through articles, podcasts, meetups, or conference talks is a plus
