Technical Author (multiple roles and seniority levels)

About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential open-source technology organization seeking Technical Authors at multiple seniority levels—from graduate to senior staff. These are fully remote positions open to candidates globally.

This is not a traditional technical writing role. You will lead documentation efforts for engineering, business operations, or customer-facing teams, combining technical communication excellence with subject-matter expertise. You'll have the opportunity to develop technical authority and contribute to documentation as a first-class discipline.

Responsibilities

Depending on your focus area, you will:

• Create, maintain, and improve software and product documentation
• Work with team members to help them make effective documentation contributions
• Influence product and service development as an expert user with insights on function and design
• Engage with user communities to ensure documentation meets their needs
• Encourage and support community engagement and contribution to documentation
• Help standardize structure, presentation, style, and language of content across products
• Collaborate with documentation peers to advance the state of the art in technical writing
• Challenge and advance documentation understanding and best practices as part of a disciplinary team

You may focus on product engineering teams, customer-facing teams working with complex software suites, or internal business operations teams maintaining employee handbooks and internal documentation.

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Excellent collaboration and communication skills
• Deep care for functional written communication
• Background as either a technical writer with a programmer's mindset, or a programmer with a record of producing excellent documentation
• Record of community engagement in open-source software, documentation, research, or other disciplines
• Sympathy to the needs and challenges of open-source software and its communities
• Technical curiosity and fascination with software technology
• Demonstrable documentation skills, insight, and enthusiasm
• Experience in software development contexts
• Familiarity with Linux, command line, Git, Sphinx, and reStructuredText
• BSc/BA degree or equivalent
• Ability to travel twice a year for up to two weeks for events

Nice to have:

• Deep technical domain knowledge
• Open-source community leadership and management experience
• User experience, interaction, or visual design background
