Ubuntu Linux Kernel Engineer – Silicon Enablement

About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential Linux distribution organization seeking kernel engineers to expand their silicon enablement capabilities. This remote role focuses on optimizing Linux kernel performance across various System on Chip (SoC) platforms and collaborating with major silicon manufacturers to broaden platform support.

We are seeking candidates from early career (2+ years) through senior-level engineers with strong hardware-level software development experience. Multiple positions are available globally for remote work.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with a globally distributed engineering team on kernel development initiatives
• Integrate silicon vendor platform support into Linux kernel builds
• Diagnose and resolve kernel issues reported by partners, customers, and the open-source community
• Deliver silicon-optimized Linux kernel variants to production
• Improve tooling and automation for kernel delivery and testing pipelines
• Submit, review, and apply kernel patches working with upstream maintainers
• Identify and implement performance optimizations for partner silicon platforms
• Conduct rigorous testing to ensure optimal hardware performance

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Significant programming ability in C
• Strong grasp of device drivers, BSPs, and hardware-level system engineering
• Solid background with git version control
• Understanding of operating system kernel fundamentals
• Professional communication skills in English (written and verbal)
• Self-motivated with ability to thrive in remote work environment
• Ability to travel twice yearly for company events (up to two weeks)

Preferred experience:

• Direct Linux kernel development experience (though candidates with RTOS or bare-metal backgrounds demonstrating hardware-level expertise will be considered)
• Python and Bash scripting ability
• Familiarity with major SoC families (NVIDIA, Xilinx, MediaTek, Qualcomm, etc.)
• Linux distribution packaging experience
• Demonstrated Linux kernel patching and debugging skills
• Performance optimization expertise for silicon platforms

Compensation details will be discussed during the screening process based on experience level and geographic location.
