Staff/Senior Backend Engineer (Node.js)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential AI technology organization that is transforming how enterprises approach process optimization and automation. Our talent team has been engaged to identify an exceptional Staff or Senior Backend Engineer to join their distributed engineering organization.

This is a fully remote position available to candidates based in the UK, Americas, or Europe (UTC-6 to UTC+1 timezones). You'll work within a collaborative, remote-first culture spanning multiple countries, contributing to a platform trusted by Fortune 500 companies.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will enhance and scale backend systems built on a MERN stack architecture. Your work will directly impact the performance, reliability, and scalability of a platform processing complex data workflows.

• Design and implement scalable backend architecture and services
• Develop and optimize real-time backend services enabling collaborative editing of graph data and ML model retraining
• Create libraries and build APIs in Node.js to interact with machine learning components
• Diagnose and resolve fault-tolerance, availability, and performance issues
• Refactor components and services while producing clear documentation
• Contribute to architectural decisions and collaborate across teams on product improvements
• Provide feedback through pair programming and code reviews, mentoring team members
• Participate in hiring and take on end-to-end project management as the team grows

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Minimum 8 years of experience as a Software Engineer with strong backend engineering background
• Proven track record developing high-performance production software and scalable architectures
• Proficiency in TypeScript and modern frameworks/technologies (Docker, Kubernetes)
• Experience building high-throughput, low-latency systems
• Practical experience designing APIs and managing databases (PostgreSQL, MongoDB) with attention to query optimization
• Strong understanding of distributed systems concepts: microservices, load balancing, caching, scaling strategies, stateless architectures
• Commitment to high engineering standards focusing on code quality, maintainability, reliability, and security
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities to methodically identify bottlenecks and implement solutions
• Drive to continuously develop skills, improve processes, and reduce technical debt
• Fluency in English with excellent communication skills for articulating complex technical concepts

Bonus qualifications:

• Experience and fluency with Python
• Background working in international high-impact startup or scale-up environments
• Active interest in AI, automation, or related fields

Compensation details will be discussed during the screening process and will be competitive with market rates for this level of experience. Our client offers generous equity compensation in addition to base salary.
