Responsibilities

We are representing a leading AI research organization in their search for Fellows to join a 4-month, full-time technical fellowship program focused on ML Systems & Reinforcement Learning. This is a unique opportunity to conduct empirical AI research with direct mentorship from senior researchers.

As a Fellow, you will:

• Design and execute an empirical research project aligned with AI safety and systems research priorities
• Work primarily with external infrastructure, open-source models, and public APIs to produce publishable research outputs
• Collaborate with experienced mentors and the broader AI research community
• Participate in weekly research discussions and knowledge-sharing sessions
• Produce public outputs such as paper submissions (over 80% of past fellows have published papers)

Project areas may include building CPU simulators for accelerator workloads, adding backends for different accelerators, creating complex synthetic data pipelines, developing model-based tools to improve training data quality, creating RL environments for capability improvement, or conducting research on RL algorithms and generalization.

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Fluency in Python programming
• Availability to work full-time for 4 months (January 2027 cohort, with some flexibility for alternative start dates)
• Work authorization in the US, UK, or Canada (visa sponsorship not available for this program)
• Strong technical background in computer science, mathematics, or physics

Ideal candidates will have:

• Strong software engineering skills with experience building complex ML systems
• Experience with training, fine-tuning, or evaluating large language models
• Comfort working with large-scale distributed systems and high-performance computing
• Ability to balance research exploration with engineering rigor and operational reliability
• Skills in analyzing and debugging model training processes
• Experience collaborating across research and engineering disciplines
• Ability to implement ideas quickly and communicate clearly in fast-paced environments
• Motivation to contribute to AI safety and beneficial AI development

The fellowship includes direct mentorship from senior researchers, access to a shared workspace (with remote options available across the UK, US, and Canada), connection to the broader AI research community, and compute funding. While the program does not guarantee full-time employment, 25-50% of past fellows have received full-time offers from the client organization.

Pay

This is a 4-month fellowship with a weekly stipend plus benefits. Fellows receive funding for compute (approximately $15,000/month) and other research expenses. The fellowship runs full-time with an expectation of 40 hours per week, with possible extension.
