Controls Software Engineer (f/m/d)

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential fusion energy organization that is seeking a Controls Software Engineer to join their team in Darmstadt. In this role, you will be essential to delivering production-quality software that enables critical calibration, imaging, data management, and supervisory control functions.

Your day-to-day work will include:

• Designing, implementing, testing, and deploying well-scoped software features from initial design through production deployment
• Building automated calibration software that integrates with hardware systems and machine workflows
• Developing image processing capabilities for target tracking, calibration, and operational engagement
• Implementing reliable data handling and storage solutions for machine and image data, including logging and basic monitoring infrastructure
• Contributing to supervisory control system development and human-machine interface (HMI) implementation
• Collaborating with software, controls, systems, and engineering teams to define interfaces, participate in code reviews, document technical decisions, and proactively address common failure modes
• Communicating progress, technical trade-offs, risks, and timelines clearly to key stakeholders

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Demonstrated experience building and testing production software within a collaborative team environment
• Proven ability to independently own moderately complex, well-scoped features from design through deployment
• Strong coding practices including writing clean, readable, documented code with proper source control and code review workflows
• Understanding of automated testing, debugging, logging, and common software failure modes
• Ability to work with technical partners to translate machine or engineering requirements into practical software solutions
• Willingness to use approved AI-assisted development tools responsibly while reviewing all generated work to the same quality standards

Preferred qualifications:

• Experience with computer vision or image processing applications
• Background in automated calibration, robotics, motion systems, or precision hardware integration
• Experience building data pipelines, working with machine data formats, databases, or high-volume data storage systems
• Experience developing supervisory control systems, HMI interfaces, or controls-adjacent software
• Prior work with hardware, experimental systems, scientific equipment, or real-time systems
