About This Role

Our talent team is representing a confidential aerospace engineering organization in Munich that is developing next-generation electric propulsion systems. We are seeking a Senior Battery Algorithms Engineer to take ownership of critical battery state estimation and prediction algorithms that ensure safe flight operations.

This is a safety-critical, certification-focused position where you will develop and validate the observers, estimators, and predictors that determine battery State of Function (SoF) for lithium-ion propulsion battery systems. Your algorithms will observe and predict state of charge (SoC), state of health (SoH), state of power (SoP), state of energy (SoE), and state of balance (SoB) across cell, cell-bank, and pack levels.

This hands-on senior role involves leading modeling, simulation, algorithm development, test-data analysis, and validation. You will set the methodology standards for the team and carry your work through to aerospace certification under DO-178C/ED-12C DAL B requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end development and validation of battery state observers, estimators, and predictors for SoF, SoC, SoH, SoP, SoE, and SoB across all system levels
  • Parameterize multi-RC equivalent-circuit models (OCV, R0, RC pairs, hysteresis, thermal, and aging effects) from cell supplier data, virtual and physical test benches, and HiL rigs
  • Design, implement, and validate estimation algorithms including Kalman filters (EKF/UKF/dual-UKF/SKF), particle filters, observers, and data-driven methods while respecting certification constraints on ML approaches
  • Develop mission-aware predictors that ingest flight-profile and navigation data to predict SoF until safe landing, compute energy margin, and update based on diversion, altitude, speed, and ambient changes
  • Develop aging and degradation models and Remaining Useful Life (RUL) prediction, validating SoH algorithms against end-of-life criteria across representative mission and durability profiles
  • Ensure algorithms align with ED-289 requirements for state observers and predictors, ED-309 methodologies for energy level information to crew, and functional-safety expectations for DAL B functions
  • Derive, document, and trace algorithm requirements from standards and system-level functional analysis, maintaining traceability into real-time battery management software using model-based design
  • Support real-time embedded realization of estimators and predictors (fixed-point implementation, Simulink code generation, MISRA C) and validate on HiL setups
  • Define test and analysis strategy for virtual and physical battery test benches and HiL rigs, analyzing data across temperature, aging, and usage variability
  • Lead collaboration with cell engineering, BMS software, test, electrical systems, and certification teams

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Control Engineering, or related field
  • 5+ years of professional experience in battery state estimation, control systems, or embedded algorithm development
  • Strong command of state estimation and control theory: Kalman filtering (EKF/UKF/dual-UKF/SKF), particle filters, observers, and system modeling, with awareness of data-driven and ML methods and their certification constraints
  • Solid battery domain knowledge: lithium-ion electrochemistry, equivalent-circuit and thermal models, aging and degradation mechanisms (capacity fade, resistance growth, lithium plating), OCV hysteresis, and cell-bank-level state granularity
  • Proficiency in Matlab/Simulink and Python, with familiarity in C/C++, fixed-point implementation, Git, and CI/CD
  • Experience with real-time simulation, HiL testing, and embedded systems
  • Familiarity with aerospace functional safety and certification: DO-178C/ED-12C and DAL concept, requirements-based verification and validation, MBSE and model-based design, and relevant battery and energy standards (ED-289, ED-309, DO-311A, SAE AIR6897)
  • DO-160 environmental awareness is a plus
  • Analytical mindset, strong attention to detail, ability to own deliverables end-to-end, and clear technical documentation skills
  • Authorization to work in Germany required
