About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential cloud infrastructure organization seeking a Senior Platform & Reliability Engineer to join their distributed team working remotely from Germany. This is a permanent, full-time position with the flexibility to work fully remote or hybrid from select German cities.

In this role, you'll take architectural ownership of critical shared infrastructure services that serve as the foundation for multiple development teams. You'll work with systems including API gateways, distributed storage, secrets management, edge security, and observability tooling. A significant part of your mandate involves inheriting and improving existing systems that may be under-documented, identifying weaknesses, and making strategic build-versus-buy decisions to modernize the platform.

A central responsibility is designing and establishing the organization's first formal on-call process, complete with runbooks for platform incidents. You'll also mature observability practices by rolling out distributed tracing, SLOs/SLIs, and comprehensive dashboards. As the technical authority for shared infrastructure, you'll advise multiple teams, systematically document your knowledge, and eliminate single points of failure across the platform.

Responsibilities

• Take architectural ownership of shared infrastructure services including API gateway/ingress, persistent storage solutions, secrets and identity infrastructure, edge security/WAF, and observability stack
• Work deeply with existing systems to identify and remediate known weak points, evaluate aging components, and decide which legacy systems to fix, replace, or retire
• Design and establish a formal on-call process with comprehensive runbooks for platform and infrastructure incidents where none currently exists
• Mature observability practices by implementing distributed tracing, SLOs/SLIs, and meaningful dashboards across the technology stack
• Participate in system design reviews, applying foundational knowledge of load balancing, caching, sharding, replication, and consistency trade-offs
• Serve as technical advisor to multiple development teams on shared infrastructure services
• Document infrastructure knowledge systematically and distribute it to prevent critical dependencies on single individuals
• Resolve known platform risks and measurably reduce single points of failure platform-wide
• Participate in occasional travel for datacenter visits and team offsites

What We're Looking For

• 7+ years of experience in platform, infrastructure, or SRE roles, ideally with end-to-end responsibility for private cloud or IaaS platforms
• Hands-on production experience with distributed storage systems (Ceph) and Kubernetes persistent storage solutions (Longhorn or comparable)
• Production experience operating API gateways and ingress controllers (Kong, Nginx Ingress, or similar), including debugging cross-cutting concerns like CORS and rate limiting
• Experience with CDN/edge security, DDoS mitigation, and WAF configuration (e.g., Cloudflare), as well as firewall-rule design
• Strong grounding in system design fundamentals: load balancing, caching, sharding/replication, consistency models, message queues, and the judgment to apply them to real-world trade-offs
• Experience designing or maturing observability (tracing, metrics, SLOs/SLIs) with tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, and OpenTelemetry is desirable
• Experience with secrets/identity infrastructure (Vault, Keycloak), messaging systems (NATS), and building on-call processes from scratch is a plus
• Comfort working with grown, incompletely documented systems, paired with pragmatism: fix what's broken, retire what's obsolete, rather than rewriting everything
• Genuine enjoyment of serving as technical go-to person across teams, actively sharing and documenting knowledge
• Professional fluency in English (working language); German language skills are a plus
• Certifications (CKA/CKS, Ceph training) and experience with virtualization platforms (Proxmox, OpenStack) are beneficial
• Must be eligible to work remotely from Germany
