Senior Backend Engineer (m/f/d)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential defense technology client in Munich, Germany. They are building next-generation autonomous air defense systems to protect critical infrastructure and personnel. As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will design and develop the integration layer for mission-critical ground control systems that coordinate sensors, effectors, and external platforms in real-time operational environments.

Responsibilities

• Own the backend and integration services connecting operator tools, autonomous vehicles, sensors, and mission systems
• Design event-driven architectures and durable API contracts enabling safe evolution across frontend, embedded, and partner systems
• Build production-grade telemetry pipelines, deployment infrastructure, and real-time data services that perform under operational conditions
• Debug and resolve issues across service boundaries, including occasional lab or field support
• Raise engineering standards through design reviews, code quality practices, and mentoring across multidisciplinary teams
• Collaborate closely with frontend, embedded, and guidance/navigation/control engineers

What We're Looking For

Required Experience:

• Bachelor's or Master's in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
• 5+ years commercial backend or platform development experience (defense domain experience not required)
• Strong Python proficiency for integration and service development
• Experience designing event-driven systems, asynchronous messaging, and API evolution strategies
• Hands-on with contract-first development using OpenAPI and Protocol Buffers
• Production experience building REST APIs, WebSockets, and pub-sub architectures
• Understanding of latency, performance trade-offs, and real-time system constraints
• Working knowledge of PostgreSQL, Redis, and selecting appropriate data stores
• Linux, Docker, and CI/CD pipeline experience
• Production observability practices: structured logging, metrics, Prometheus, and Grafana
• Strong software craftsmanship: testing, distributed debugging, code review discipline
• Fluent English; German is a plus
• Ownership mindset with ability to follow problems across system boundaries
• Comfortable in Scrum or agile team environments

Nice to Have:

• ROS 2 experience with nodes, topics, services, and DDS/QoS
• Deep networking knowledge (TCP/IP, UDP, sockets) or Nginx/HAProxy configuration
• Time-series databases (InfluxDB) for high-frequency telemetry
• Additional languages: TypeScript/Node, Go, or C++
• Familiarity with MAVLink or similar vehicle telemetry protocols
• Background in robotics, autonomous systems, or industrial control software
• Tech-lead or mentoring experience
• Willingness to travel occasionally for integration and testing campaigns
