Data Lead (BI & Analytics)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential industrial technology client in Berlin. They operate across multiple European markets and have recently closed significant institutional funding. The organization is at an inflection point: strong revenue growth, expanding operations, and sophisticated tooling in place—but no dedicated owner for business intelligence and analytics.

This is a foundational Data Lead role. You will build and own the end-to-end data function: consolidating fragmented reporting, establishing a single source of truth on Databricks, defining core metrics in partnership with Finance and Operations, and delivering reliable reporting across financial, controlling, and operational domains. It is a player-coach position—hands-on for the first 6–12 months, then growing a small team as the foundation matures.

Responsibilities

• Own the data platform: design and maintain ingestion pipelines from CRM/ERP and other sources into Databricks; build data models; ensure quality and documentation.
• Build the metric layer: establish one governed definition per KPI (gross margin, net revenue margin, on-time performance, working capital metrics, and others) in collaboration with Finance and Operations; version and document all definitions.
• Deliver three core report suites: financial reporting for executive leadership and the board, controlling reports for FP&A, and operational dashboards for supply chain and commercial teams.
• Stand up the BI front end (Metabase) as the single reporting interface and migrate departments off ad-hoc CRM-based reports.
• Partner cross-functionally with Finance, Operations, and Commercial stakeholders as the go-to resource for data questions; translate business needs into models and reports.
• Prepare investor and board data packs in close collaboration with the executive team.
• Hire and manage one Data/BI Analyst once the foundational layer is stable; define the longer-term shape of the data function.

What We're Looking For

Must-have:

• 4–8 years in analytics engineering or data/BI roles with strong hands-on depth: proficient SQL, dbt (or equivalent transformation framework), and experience with a lakehouse or warehouse platform—ideally Databricks.
• Prior experience building a metric or semantic layer: can describe a project where you consolidated conflicting KPI definitions into a single governed model.
• Direct experience working with CRM/ERP data models as source systems, including object model quirks and ETL/API constraints.
• Understanding of the unit economics of trading, distribution, or marketplace businesses: gross margin, net revenue margin, working capital, inventory or flow metrics. Experience with physical goods, not pure SaaS.
• Business-facing communication skills: comfortable presenting to CFO or COO-level stakeholders, able to push back on metric definitions and prioritize ruthlessly.
• Player-coach mindset: excited to build hands-on for the first 6–12 months, then lead a small team.

Nice-to-have:

• Experience with Metabase (or comparable BI tools such as Looker or Tableau, with willingness to adopt Metabase).
• German language skills (working language is English; German helps with some internal stakeholders).
• Prior experience in a venture-backed scale-up between Series A and C.
• Exposure to finance systems integration (ERP, accounting data, bank/payment data) for controlling and cash reporting.
• First leadership experience managing 1–3 reports.
