Backend Engineer – FinTech

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential fintech organization operating across multiple European markets. Our client is experiencing significant growth and seeks a Backend Engineer to strengthen their financial infrastructure. This role is based in Berlin and offers the opportunity to work on mission-critical payment systems and financial data platforms.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement backend services for payment processing, invoicing, reconciliation, and financial reporting systems
• Build robust, auditable data pipelines ensuring accuracy and traceability across financial operations
• Develop and maintain integrations with payment gateways, banking APIs, and financial data providers
• Enforce data integrity standards and implement patterns for idempotency, retry logic, and failure handling in financial workflows
• Collaborate with compliance and product teams to translate regulatory requirements into technical implementations
• Contribute to fraud detection logic, rate limiting, and access control mechanisms protecting financial operations
• Own incidents end-to-end, including investigation, resolution, and post-mortem analysis to improve system reliability

What We're Looking For

• 5-7+ years of backend engineering experience with meaningful exposure to fintech, payments, or financial data systems
• Strong proficiency in Java (Spring Boot) with deep understanding of transactional systems and data consistency
• Solid experience with PostgreSQL, including schema design, indexing, and query optimization for financial data
• Experience integrating with payment processors (such as Stripe, Adyen, or similar) or open banking APIs
• Familiarity with modern tech including Python, AWS, Kinesis, Terraform, and GitHub Actions
• High ownership mindset with equal commitment to correctness and delivery speed
• Ability to remain calm under pressure, think structurally, and maintain rigorous testing practices
