Software Engineer – PLC/OT

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential industrial manufacturing client in Richen, Baden-Württemberg, seeking a Software Engineer with PLC/OT expertise. Our client operates advanced manufacturing facilities where digital engineering meets physical production at scale. This role sits at the intersection of traditional operational technology and modern software practices, driving the evolution toward Software Defined Manufacturing.

You'll join a product team responsible for the systems that transform digital models into manufactured components. This is an opportunity to modernize legacy manufacturing execution systems, reduce dependence on vendor-specific PLC code, and build simulation-capable architectures that support future production demands.

Responsibilities

• Understand and document existing PLC/OT code bases, making them accessible to cross-functional team members
• Collaborate with Product Delivery teams to evolve current manufacturing execution architectures toward Software Defined Manufacturing principles
• Monitor, maintain, and improve operational uptime, focusing on reliable updates, latency reduction, and system efficiency
• Serve as a technical bridge between digital product systems and physical manufacturing operations, ensuring alignment and integration
• Define and track SLAs/SLOs and manufacturing KPIs including OEE for critical production systems
• Provide operational support and troubleshooting during facility working hours

What We're Looking For

• Experienced software or automation engineer with proven background in PLC programming or other OT technologies
• Willingness to adopt modern software engineering practices including code reviews, automated testing, and CI/CD pipelines
• Experience operating and supporting large-scale software or OT systems in production environments
• Background in operationally-focused organizations, ideally in logistics or manufacturing, with understanding of downtime's commercial impact
• Proficiency with several of these technologies:
  • PLC programming (TIA19 experience is advantageous)
  • Robot programming (KRL knowledge is a plus)
  • OPC-UA
  • MQTT, Python, C++, or C# (beneficial but not required)
• Familiarity with monitoring and alerting practices for production systems
• Experience defining and working within SLA/SLO frameworks
• Ability to travel to the manufacturing site in Richen as needed, and occasionally within Germany and Austria for team events
