(Senior) AI Product Engineer (m/w/d)

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential legal-tech organization seeking a Senior AI Product Engineer to drive autonomous AI initiatives and support cross-functional product teams. You will report directly to Product Leadership and split your time between independent projects and strategic squad support.

Independent AI Projects (approximately 50% of your time):

• Identify high-impact AI opportunities within legal workflows where no dedicated squad currently owns the solution
• Rapidly validate ideas through discussions with legal professionals and operational stakeholders, building working prototypes within days
• Take ownership of production implementation: routing logic, model chaining, summarization pipelines, and agent-based automation
• Hand off mature features to product squads with complete documentation, evaluation frameworks, and transition plans

Squad Support and Technical Leadership (approximately 50% of your time):

• Provide expert guidance on feasibility, cost modeling, model selection, and risk assessment before AI feature launches
• Support teams in designing evaluation frameworks, golden datasets, and guardrails for production systems
• Review technical concepts before roadmap commitment, including security considerations such as prompt injection and regulatory compliance
• Advance organizational AI best practices: establish prompt engineering standards, implement LLM observability, and optimize agent-based development workflows

What We're Looking For

Required Experience and Technical Skills:

• Proven track record of shipping multiple production AI/LLM systems to real users with full accountability—prototypes alone are not sufficient
• Demonstrated product ownership: ability to take a vague problem statement through to a finished, deployed solution
• Strong Python proficiency and solid software engineering fundamentals including Git workflows, testing practices, CI/CD pipelines, and code review processes
• Deep hands-on experience with LangGraph, LangChain, or similar frameworks, including understanding of underlying implementation details
• Proficiency with LLM provider APIs: function/tool calling, structured outputs, and streaming implementations
• Experience building evaluation systems, golden datasets, and guardrails prior to deployment
• Advanced prompt engineering skills with knowledge of when to apply specific techniques
• Business-level English required; German language skills are a significant advantage given the legal domain focus

Essential Soft Skills:

• Maturity to work independently without constant squad support: you set your own priorities and understand when to push back
• Ability to translate technical trade-offs for non-technical stakeholders and legal workflows for engineering teams
• Comfort with senior-level ownership defined by approach and impact rather than years of experience

The role is based in Berlin with an office-first structure: three days in-office, two days remote, with flexibility in how you structure your week. The office is centrally located with modern amenities.
