About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential infrastructure company at the forefront of AI application development. Our client is building the platform that connects applications and agents to hundreds of AI models through a unified API, handling routing, observability, security, and governance at scale.

As the Design Engineer for their AI Gateway product, you will own both product design and frontend implementation. This is a rare opportunity to use your product judgment, design craft, and code to shape a developer-focused product and ship the complete experience yourself. You will work embedded with a Product Manager and engineering team, with support from a broader design organization.

The role includes in-office anchor days (Monday, Tuesday, Friday) if you are within commuting distance of San Francisco, New York, London, or Berlin. Beyond that distance, the role is fully remote.

Responsibilities

  • Own product design and frontend implementation for the complete journey from model discovery to production AI operations
  • Design and build production experiences across web dashboards, CLI tools, and APIs, selecting the appropriate medium for each use case
  • Create intuitive interfaces for complex concepts including model providers, credentials, routing logic, budgets, logs, performance metrics, privacy controls, and governance
  • Establish design patterns that scale across new providers, modalities, and workloads
  • Conduct customer research and analyze product data to identify problems, define success metrics, and make informed tradeoffs
  • Ensure quality after launch including visual polish, interaction design, accessibility, performance, error handling, instrumentation, and edge case coverage
  • Leverage coding agents to accelerate exploration and implementation while maintaining responsibility for testing, debugging, and production quality

What We're Looking For

Required:

  • Portfolio demonstrating work you personally identified, designed, built, shipped, and iterated based on real-world usage
  • Production experience building web applications with React and TypeScript in large, existing codebases
  • Strong visual and interaction design craft, particularly making technical or data-rich products understandable without sacrificing advanced user control
  • Ability to design across graphical interfaces, CLI workflows, API behavior, and implementation details
  • Experience treating accessibility, performance, failure recovery, and instrumentation as core design considerations
  • Track record using customer research and product data to drive decisions and communicate reasoning clearly
  • Experience using coding agents in daily work while maintaining the ability to explain, test, debug, and take responsibility for generated code

Bonus Experience:

  • Developer tools, infrastructure products, model marketplaces, or observability platforms
  • AI models, providers, inference platforms, guardrails, or AI application tooling
  • APIs, command-line tools, structured product content, or agent-facing interfaces
  • Building applications or agents using modern AI development frameworks

There is no required career path for this role. Candidates may come from product design, frontend engineering, creative development, or non-traditional backgrounds. We evaluate based on the quality of shipped work and the judgment behind it.
